Fall for Denim 2016

trends-20

Denim is a timeless staple in everyone’s closet. And by everyone I mean EVERYONE, Men, women, teens, young adults, even little toddlers in teeny tiny denim. What makes denims so timeless is that it come in all types of clothing. It is also so versatile you can either go sophisticated or edgy with the right denim piece. Even celebrities like Rihanna or Beyoncé rock denim on their days off; Walking busy streets and treating them like their own catwalk. Where denim came from as a necessity during blue collar work has transformed into one of the most long-running fundamentals in the fashion history.

With autumn arriving, that means school’s back in session. For this season, denim is heavily emphasized onto ’60s and ’70s style. This means we are seeing denim that ranges from classy, vintage, and a splash of bohemian, giving women a chic and mature look.

To keep you glamorous people on trend, here’s some of the top leading denim trends for this Fall/Winter season 2016/2017.

Flare Jeans

Flare jeans are back and here to stay a while. Used in both casual and professional wear, this style of jean can be used on anyone and worn anywhere. You can dress up your denim with a classy pair of wide leg jeans with heels, or for a more casual look go for a at the knee flare. Another young and hip spin on the flare jean is the kick-flare trend which shows a bit of the ankle. Even though this a slightly bold route, you can still opt to make kick flares sophisticated.

Two-toned Jeans

Worn by Kendall Jenner for this past summer, these two toned jeans add dimension to any outfit. Don’t be wary of this “Canadian Tuxedo” in a single pair of pants. I promise you’ll be on point while rocking these jeans. To my dedicated trendsetters, I highly recommend investing in a pair of these jeans to play with during this fall season.

Patchwork Denim

Another trendsetter for this season is the patchwork denim wear. Much like the two toned denim, patchwork allows a denim spin on the technique of color blocking. This array of mix-matched patterns of different denim tones provides dimension to the wearer. Through this dimension, you get to show off your fabulous personality and fun style.

Boyfriend Jeans

Hailed as the new skinny jean of 2015, these comfy go-tos are back once again just in time for the fall season. Who isn’t so happy that boyfriend jeans are back once again? I know I am! Just like the flares and the ever famous skinny jean, boyfriend jeans go with any outfit with more emphasis on a casual tone. (Not to mention how extremely comfortable they are too!)

Skinny Jeans

Last but not least, a classic denim look that is always back in season, the skinny jean. A favorite for a majority of people, skinny denim is seen, worn, and adored everywhere. This trend has been on the rise for the past nine years and has transformed into a staple for fashionistas all over the world. Whether you rock your skinny jeans at ankle length, with rips in the knee, or with a pair of chunky ankle boots, these jeans are versatile for any outfit!

Halsey: Not Gay Enough for You?

“What Does a Queer Pop Star Look Like in 2016?” This was the title of an article written by BuzzFeed, recently criticizing singer, Halsey, for her performance with the Chainsmokers at the MTV music awards. The performance featured Halsey in a sparkling white two-piece with a long brown-haired wig over her normally short, punk cut. For many of Halsey’s fans, it was yet another way that she was expressing herself- in her usual unrestrained and in-the-moment attitude. But, for critics, it was just “too straight” to accurately represent Halsey’s “gayness”.

Halsey, who has made her career on being honest and entirely open with her fans, has never been quiet about her sexuality. As an openly bisexual female, Halsey has been paving her own way through the music industry. Make no mistakes, there have been openly gay celebrities in the past. Melissa Ethridge and  Elton John being two of the most memorable. That doesn’t make Halsey’s road to success any easier, though. For someone who has promised to be her true self, discovering that ‘self’ and becoming confident with that ‘self’ can be scary. Not to mention when you have the world watching and waiting to judge every step of your journey.

All young, female pop stars are pressured to meet a certain standard to appeal to the larger audience. One could argue that Halsey’s concerts and performances with her fans are a more intimate and safe place for her to be herself. Yet, the VMAs stage is an entirely different world. Its like going to a restaurant with a dress code after years of lounging around at your local pub. The change of clothes and hair doesn’t change who you are as a person. And they certainly shouldn’t encourage people to question your sexual identity.

The beginning of the BuzzFeed article attacks Halsey’s recent VMAs performance.  Then it even questions her bisexuality because of it or at least her loyalty to portraying herself as a gay individual appropriately. Later, in the article, BuzzFeed puts the blame of her style choices on the pressure of the industry stating, “ Halsey remains an out bisexual woman, no matter what she does with her art. But she’s also working her way through the thorny tangle of an old-fashioned and male-dominated music industry, which places enormous demands on how women look and act.”

The finger pointing does nothing to take away from the ignorance of their assumptions. If anything, it only adds salt to the wound. Who is to say that Halsey didn’t make the choice in wardrobe, hair and physical interactions entirely on her own? For a singer who has been bravely honest with the world, why would she jump ships so suddenly?

An early report of the incident by Teen Vogue caught Halsey’s initial response to the BuzzFeed article via Twitter. She has since deleted the outspoken responses from her page. Maybe she decided that the article spoke for itself, or maybe she was confident enough in her own peace of mind to let to the article’s flame burn out on its own. But, the damage is already done. The bierasure has been unleashed on the unsuspecting singer, and could have a profound effect on her impressionable fans, out-bisexual individuals and curious ones, as well.

Is there such a thing as not being gay enough (not looking gay enough)? No, but BuzzFeed’s blissful ignorance and drama-seeking headlines have those of us who are openly gay, and feminine, questioning how our femininity is received, even by people in our own LGBT community.

What do you think about Buzzfeed’s response to Halsey’s outfit choice at the VMAs? Is this something that anyone should even comment on with such intensity? Even if the person is famous and in the public eye? Comment and let us know below! Or tweet at us @GlamorousPaper

Fall Fashion: What’s Trending Now?

What’s Trending in Fall 2016?

With New York Fashion Week (NWFW) having taken the world by storm, now all of us fashion lovers seem to be left in the wake of: “Well what is it that is trending this Fall?” Last fall, 70’s attire and the colors to go with it was the “it” way to dress. This year NYFW showed us styles ranging from Renaissance to Men’s Wear to 80’s one shoulder. So with such a broad display of fashion to choose from, let’s breakdown feasible pieces to pull off this Fall season.

Let Your Fur Down

NYFW highlighted a lot of statement fur coats on the runway this year. Whether it be in a fur coat, vest, or shoulder wrap, faux fur is the perfect addition to any fall outfit as the season’s change. As a statement piece, try finding a fur vest to add to your wardrobe this season. A vest is versatile because it will be just warm enough to add oomph to the shorter sleeved outfits at the beginning of the season. But then, in Winter, layer the vest under a coat to add extra warmth!

Look Tan in Cooler Temperatures

A big color rocked on the runways this past week was tan. This color made its appearance with the classiest of vengeance that have fashion lovers needing to purchase a chic piece. Tan outerwear is the perfect addition if you want to invest in a timeless classic. I suggest rocking a tan cape, which rocks two NYFW trends and creates the classiest couple in outwear this Fall.

Blooming in Fall

On top of the bright colors seen on the runway, especially dusty pink and yellow, florals are huge this year. Despite florals having a more spring feel, designers’ truly captured the essence of Fall within these bold floral patterns. In order to grow in this trend, look for florals that are small and patterned, either on a blouse or a long dress.

Chokers are not “Basic”

2016-03-03-whats-news-choker-march-2016-1

That’s right, word is in. Chokers have moved from the “basic” category and have become a front runner in Fall accessories. This Fall fashion trend will add glam to any outfit as we move to button down blouses and cocktail dresses. For a classic route, try adding a skinny chiffon scarf to add vintage flair to an outfit. For a dresser event add a blinged out or metal choker to add show-stopping pizazz to your outfit.

70’s Shearling

For all of those who didn’t want 70’s fashion to end, never fear because shearling coats made their appearance this season. I for one, love the 70’s fashion trend. So when I saw shearling, I was instantly excited to rock a jacket reminiscent of Hyde or Jackie on “That 70’s Show.” Shearling coat choices were seen in denim, suede, and even leather. Try a shearling coat over a midi-dress and some ankle boots to complete your Fall look.

Tartan, Plaid, Jumpers, and the Revamped “Schoolgirl”

elle_fw16trends_schooluniform-1

Another timeless Fall classic seems to be tartan and plaid. This pattern is always the first thing we see in stores as back to school begins. However, designers at NYFW pay homage to the “schoolgirl” fad by incorporating Tartan fabric into timeless A-line dresses, pencil skirts, blouses, and overcoats. Another item falling under this category were jumpers. Schoolgirl-esque jumpers were given a stylish upgrade as vintage patterns were used, mostly from the 70’s.  Try finding a knee-length jumper dress in a golden yellow corduroy or wool as a statement piece.

Velvet Baby, Velvet

fall_2016_fashion_trends_new_york_fashion_week_velvet

Velvet is the last major fashion trend for this Fall I feel we can all follow. Through platforms shoes, leggings, or turtlenecks, velvet is the perfect fall fabric to bring richness into an outfit. I would suggest waiting on this velvet fabric until later in the season, because it can be warm to wear. But the best part about velvet, is it looks best on everyone. It is flattering due to it’s darker color and pattern it creates. So my fellow fashionistas, rock that velvet (and don’t worry about Halloween candy or Thanksgiving dinner showing!)

So Glamorous Gurus, grab your latest trends and runway right into fall with all these new looks. If there are other trends from NYFW you’re going to that I didn’t mention, leave a comment below and let us know about it! Short Skirts and High Stakes: American Apparel Files for Bankruptcy

american apparel

American Apparel, the highly controversial, sweatshop free, teen clothing store filed for bankruptcy protection today. The company, founded by ex-CEO Dov Charney has apparently been struggling financially since 2009. A potential source of the business’ losses can well be attributed to the controversies the company has caused. Known for its incredibly sexual and degrading advertisements, American Apparel was put on the spot a few years back after news that Charney was fired after many accusations of sexual harassment.

Ex-CEO Dov Charney was often criticized for his company's racy ads that display women as sex objects

The company owes more than $500 million dollars while  only worth $200 million. Standard General, American Apparel’s largest shareholder is currently still holding on to Charney’s 43% in the company. Whether or not the company will still be afloat this time next year is still up in the air.

Blackface or a Fashion Trend?

If you’ve read the title of this article and are thoroughly confused and possibly offended, let me first explain. Recently, Black Canadian model Winnie Harlow has been making waves in the media for her unique look: her black and white skin. Winnie Harlow  has a skin condition called vitiligo, one that interferes with her skin pigmentation.

Lately, the look has been captured by the media and in return has been replicated by fans. Now replication of trends on social media is nothing new-except when it starts racial controversies. Many of the fans replicating the look are white and in turn are applying dark makeup.

winnie duplicate

If at this point you’re thinking so what, allow me to give a little recap on the history of blackface. In the 19th century America, it was customary for actors in theatre and later film to wear theatrical makeup when playing a black character. It proliferated many of the horrendous stereotypes such as “coons” and mocked African Americans with enormous amounts of disrespect. Blackface minstrel shows were however quite popular satire in those days yet had prolific effects on the Black community. These effects are still seen today yet fortunately are now a big cultural “no no” to attempt in society.

So is duplicating Harlow’s look appropriation, appreciation, or just racist? Winnie responded to the controversy earlier this week in an Instagram post:

“My response to this is probably not what a lot of people want but here it goes: every time someone wants fuller lips, or a bigger bum, or curly hair, or braids does Not mean our culture is being stolen. Have you ever stop to realize these things used to be ridiculed and now they’re loved and lusted over. No one wants to ‘steal’ our look here. We’ve just stood so confidently in our own nappy hair and du-rags and big a**es (or in this case, my skin) that now those who don’t have it love and lust after it. Just because a black girl wears blue contacts and long weave doesn’t mean she wants to be white and just because a white girl wears braids and gets lip injection doesn’t mean she wants to be black. The amount of mixed races in this world is living proof that we don’t want to be each other we’ve just gained a national love for each other. …It is very clear to me when someone is showing love and I appreciate these people recreating, loving and broadcasting something to the world that once upon a time I cried myself to sleep over #1LOVE”

winnie twitter

Sadly, as always with social media, Harlow received numerous amounts of backlash and hate for her response. And to be honest, I’m on the fence about it. Appropriation and appreciation is always such a fine line I think everyone tries hard to find. However, if a subject as touchy as blackface is being called a “trend”, I know it would be hard to receive general support. It is important to note that Harlow is not the only one with vitiligo and ultimately this is still a sensitive subject for the many dealing with this skin condition. As for my word of advice: tread lightly on social media.  Personally, that line is defined by ignorance or lack thereof. Knowing the historical underpinnings of any trend is crucial if you are going to appreciate it appropriately.
