James Cameron Announces Four “Avatar” Sequels, The World Groans

The world is going to see a lot more blue people.

Avatar (2009)
Just last week, James Cameron made the announcement that he is expanding his plan for three Avatar sequels to four. The director has always been upfront with his plans to continue telling stories of his fictional world of Pandora and create a cinematic universe based on the first film but he still hasn’t made any progress beyond writing. Last year he said he was trying “to keep it to three sequels” despite having scripts for four. Guess he couldn’t condense.

Near the end of 20th Century Fox’s presentation at CinemaCon this Thursday, Mr. Cameron made a special guest appearance. “We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process,” he announced.

Working with “four top screenwriters and some of the top artisan designers in the world,” Cameron realized his vision for the Avatar universe transcended the bounds of the original 2009 film and the previously planned sequels. “It is going to be a true epic saga that is going to be told in this rich and complex world but we have begun to bump up against the limitations of our art form,” said Cameron. “There were just too many great visual ideas for two sequels, so we talked to Fox and we expanded it for three sequels. And then as the writing process has continued and as the script work is finishing up, it’s not three. It looks like it is four.”

“The people who have seen it so far have been speechless.”

Though Cameron seems excited by the prospects of a five film Avatar experience, a lot of us Earthlings are feeling weary with the thought of more alien AU Pocahontas movies.

A few just attacked Cameron himself.

I doubt all the jokes and complaints will really convince James Cameron to not make the movies, especially when he already plans to release them in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023, but who’s to get in the way of a man’s vision, right? Besides, even if the films tank, he’ll still have the Dark Horse Comics line of graphic novels, a Cirque du Soleil show, and a Disney theme park attraction opening in Orlando next year to fill his wallet.

But the thing is, Cameron has been announcing sequels since 2010 yet none have been made, so it really begs the question, “Will he ever make the movies?” Maybe with the years of release announced he’ll finally keep his promise. We’ll just have to wait and see.

The Wow, The Meh, and The Cringey

The MTV Movie Awards has never been one to take itself too seriously. It’s for sure no Academy Awards or Golden Globes, especially with its emphasis on flashy effects, big-budget blockbusters, and younger audience appeal. To kick it off this year, MTV decided to host the awards outdoors on the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank, CA as opposed to the traditional theater venue, a risky move that was ultimately fun and innovative. Nevertheless, sometimes it outdoes itself in jaw-droppers and head-scratchers. Here are few of the most exciting moments of the night, whether spectacular or not.

WOW: Co-Hosts Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart Recreate Mad Max in the Coolest Entrance Ever

MEH: Cursing Up a Storm and D*ck Jokes

The hosts never shied away from throwing in a swear every now and then, dropping F-bombs left and right. One of them being in reference to Leonardo diCaprio and his character’s encounter with a bear in The Revenant. Don’t watch with youngsters if you want to keep them pure.

CRINGEY: Teen Moms Joke

Zac Efron, Adam DeVine, and Anna Kendrick participated in a bit that at best falls flat and at worst makes fun of teen moms and MTV’s show 16 and Pregnant. In an effort to promote the three actors’ upcoming movie, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, the involves Anna setting up a dating audition for the two guys, but instead of the girls she picked out coming on stage, actors pretending to be pregnant teens come up instead. Like DeVine’s expression throughout the bit indicated, this joke was just distasteful.

Lots of other fun things like Alexander Skarsgård presenting an award pantsless, Rebel Wilson and Adam DeVine’s kiss, and The Lonely Island’s jiggy Will Smith Tribute happened too, but we’ll forever be scarred by that awful song about Leo and the bear.

Outlander Season 2 Premiere

Nothing to do/watch tonight? Fear not because the second season of Outlander premiered April 9th, at 9/8c on STARZ.

If you haven’t seen Outlander you should definitely fix that right now. Full of passion, drama, gorgeous visuals, emotional storytelling, and compelling characters, the show is much more than the fantastical romance many simplify it to be. The cable show is based on Diana Gabaldon’s highly successful Outlander book series and began airing in August 2014. Based on the premise of a WWII army nurse’s traveling back in time to 18th century Scotland and her whirlwind romance with a Highland warrior fighting in the Jacobite risings, the show explores fantasy, history, psychological suspense, politics, and science fiction along with romance. Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) fight to survive through the milieu of violence and be with each other despite all the forces tearing them apart.

It’s exceptionally entertaining in terms of storytelling and aesthetic and doesn’t shy away from any grisly, controversial topics despite it’s abundant beauty. And with all the trauma of the final two episodes of Season 1, fans are left to wonder, “What will happen to Claire and Jamie?”

Warning: The rest of this post contains spoilers for the first season.

Now that Jamie and Claire are safely in Paris and far away from the horrible Black Jack Randall, we think they’ll finally have a little bit of happiness, especially with a baby on the horizon. But no one gets over something so psychologically and physically damaging as the abuse Jamie suffered at the end of Season 1, so it’s highly understandable that he’s “lost his sparkle a little bit – he’s a bit of a shadow.” Nevertheless we’re still hoping for some emotional stability for these two lovers.

Ideally we can get a few questions answered in the Season 2 premiere tonight too.

  • Where’s Frank Randall and what is he doing? He’s just been stuck in the future/present/past (it’s the 1940s so it’s kind of all three) this entire time wanting his wife to come back while everyone one else is trying not to get killed 200 years in the past.
  • Will Claire and Jamie stop the Jacobite risings? Probably not since that wouldn’t be as interesting but who knows? (People who have read the books, don’t spoil!)
  • Is Jamie okay? He has endured so much torment it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s permanently traumatized.
  • Is the Fraser marriage okay? “Paris is not a great place for their relationship,” Sam Heughan adds. “It’s a poisonous place.”
  • Is Black Jack Randall dead? Last time we saw him he was getting a hearty helping of meat in the form of a cow stampede so he could be gone, but who knows?

Guess we’ll found out the answers (and probably have a lot more questions) after the season premiere. Fingers crossed for minimal deaths and torture!

Sadly, I won’t be in New York anytime soon so you guys have to go watch them for me! Ned’s Declassified Life Survival Guide!

If you’re a 90’s kid or a 00’s kid you looked to this guy for advice on all things middle school (sometimes even high school!).

As the star of the popular Nickelodeon TV show Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, Devon Werkheiser helped us navigate the turbulent waters of crazy teachers, gym class, group projects, crushes, and friendships that make up our public school system. With his two best friends, Cookie and Moze, he did the impossible: create a guide that will help you survive school.

The show ran for three years helping kids all over the country not only survive but conquer school. Some of my favorite tips include:

  • Get a haircut 2 weeks before school starts so it can grow in.
  • Don’t be afraid to raise your hand. It doesn’t mean you’re dumb when you raise your hand you just get interested.
  • If your crush doesn’t like you remember you could still be friends.
  • Don’t stress, or you’ll make a mess.
  • Don’t like something? Don’t complain, change it.
  • If you’re not popular in the top ten, you’re popular in your top ten.
  • Be confident, be grateful, not jealous.

Now, we all wish we could have good old Ned back with a holy guide of tips for high school and college (trust me, I could use a few), but Nickelodeon is probably not going to revive the show anytime soon. It would be awesome getting the actors back together considering how much everyone has grown over the years though.

And my personal favorite:

Luckily, Devon Werkheiser, who played Ned, heard and answered our prayers with a web series of his own called Devon’s Life Survival Guide, a YouTube series of general life tips. With the first episode uploaded on Jan. 25, 2016, the weekly webisodes deal with a variety of topics such as productivity, spirituality, and wellness and take in questions from viewers themselves.

“Hello. I’m Devon Werkheiser. It’s been years since I’ve helped you survive middle school.”

Cue the feels.

One of Devon’s first tips is really profound and inspiring: “Choose your growth.” You can learn and grow from anything you experience. Whether it was a bad or great situation, you were changed from it so it is up to you to learn and improve from what you experienced. “It’s a choice to be an active creator of your life or a victim to it.” Preach it, Devon!

Watch the first episode here and make sure to comment so he can answer your questions!

The nostalgia is too real with this. If you’re looking to take a walk down memory lane to afternoons on the couch eating Gushers and watching Ned, Cookie, and Moze get into another round of crazy antics or you’re just really into conquering your life, watch Devon’s videos. Just like back in 2004, the tips are as helpful as ever. Thanks, Devon.

He also writes and performs original music which he uploads to YouTube as well so check him out!
