Mary Jane Watson: The New and Improved.

Is Zendaya Coleman’s casting in “Spiderman: Homecoming” turning the page on racially equal casting in Hollywood?

tumblr_ochamfayrv1v4shvyo1_500

When Disney Channel star, Zendaya was cast as a key role in the upcoming film “Spiderman: Homecoming”, comic book and movie lovers everywhere flooded social media sites. Fans made their own assumptions about Zendaya’s involvement in the film. These assumptions immediately speculating that her role as “Michelle” (a character who does not exist in the comics or previous films, and certainly not as a key role) was just a cover-up for her part as Mary Jane Watson.  Despite the lack of confirmation from Sony and Marvel, people still had a lot to say.

In the past, Mary Jane Watson has always been portrayed by young white actresses. This most likely had to do with her  comic book character being a white red-head. For many, Zendaya’s mixed roots were a game changer, one they aren’t ready to accept, while others believe she fits the role like Cinderella’s glass slipper.

But where does all the hate come from?

In a society that claims to have progressed in terms of gender and racial equality, people are so quick to criticize that very same equality when it manifests into a real thing. Hollywood has encouraged much of the backlash with their own misrepresentations of race. After decades of miscast roles, cringe-worthy black face and blatant disregard for casting characters of color accurately, we should be well on our way to fixing the problem. I hate to break it to you, but that isn’t the case.

Just take a look at some of the films released in more recent years, where characters of color were cast with white actors and actresses.

Remember “Exodus: Gods and Kings” (2014)? That movie ignited the passionate anger of people worldwide for using white actors for the two lead roles, both of which were colored-characters. Not to mention a number slew of slaves and extras whom were also misrepresented racially. However, the hype didn’t last long, and the movie was still a box office hit. Go figure.

There are other (countless) portrayals of this type of ignorance in Hollywood, and the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon: “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time” (2010), “Pan” (2015), “Gods of Egypt” (2016). All of these films involve characters of color, the majority of which are represented by white actors and actresses. Not to mention, the highly anticipated 2010 film produced by M. Night Shyamalan, “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, an adaption of a television series that revolves almost entirely around a cast of Asian and Native American characters. The actors who played them in the film? They were all white. Oh, except the villains, they were graciously allowed to keep their racial identity.

Hollywood isn’t the only problem, though. Sure, its incessant habit to repeat past mistakes and then beg for forgiveness until we’ve all forgotten and moved on is a large part of the problem. But in the same breath, the audience also plays a huge part in reinforcing this repetitive process of inequality. Actors and actresses should be cast for appropriately based on the characters of color.

Or so one would think…

…and one would be wrong.

Take “The Hunger Games” trilogy. That took the world by storm when it was released back in 2008. Four years later, when the first of four film adaptations were released, fans across the world directed their attention to the wrong racial misinterpretation. The argument was that Rue, a young female character, should not have been played by, Amandla Stenberg, a colored-actress, despite the fact that the author, Suzanne Collins, made it quite clear in her description of Rue that the young girl was both “dark skinned and dark-eyed.”

The physical proof didn’t stop fans from unleashing hell on the poor, undeserving actress who was perfect for the part. Even worse, the main character Katniss’s physical description suggested that she, too, wasn’t white. Yet, when the blonde haired and blue-eyed, Jennifer Lawrence, took up the lead role, the indiscretion went unnoticed.

So, for the sake of breaking this racially unbalanced foundation that Hollywood has created, maybe we should start being genuine when we say “may the best actress or actor win” and stop using it as a justification when it suits our cause. Because, if you can sit through Angelina Jolie playing Mariane Pearl, a character who is of Afro-Chinese-Cuban descent, or Lawrence Olivier with blackface as Othello, then the gorgeous Zendaya Coleman playing a comic book favorite should be a breath of fresh air.

Zendaya Attacks Hollywood’s Standard of Beauty… Again!

Zendaya has yet again shown us why she is a power feminist!

image

The 19-year-old former Disney star has proven time and time again that she isn’t afraid to confront Hollywood’s standard of beauty. Zendaya recently posed in Puerto Vallarta for Modeliste Magazine and this past Tuesday she sent the edits back that appeared to have photoshopped her hips and torso to appear thinner.

Zendaya immediately took to Instagram and posted the photo with the caption, “Had a new shoot come out today and was shocked when I found my 19 year old hips and torso quite manipulated. These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows I stand for honest and pure self love. So I took it upon myself to release the real pic (right side) and I love it 😍😘 Thank you @modelistemagazine for pulling down the images and fixing this retouch issue.”

The Editor-in-Chief of Modeliste Magazine, Amy McCabe, said the images would be removed and be replaced with the unedited version.

“In light of our not-yet-released November issue, with Modeliste’s Cover Girl, Zendaya and the swirling controversy in regards to any re-touched images, I am compelled to publicly address this situation which was brought to my attention yesterday, personally by Zendaya. Upon review of the final edited images which had been submitted to us by an independent editing company, together, as a collaboration between myself, Zendaya and her parents, we concluded that the images had been retouched to an extent that was not acceptable and not true to the values and ideals we represent and promote in our publication. I, therefore, made the executive decision to immediately pull the issue in order to have this rectified and have the images restored to their original, natural state which will reflect the true beauty and radiance of Zendaya, McCabe said in a statement on the Modeliste Magazine website.

We are proud of Zendaya for breaking Hollywood’s standard of beauty and showing women that they can be beautiful in whatever skin their in!

imageZendaya has officially become apart of the Barbie family with her new doll. Stemming from an incident that happened earlier this year at the Oscars, E News’ Giuliana Rancic said Zendaya looked as if she smelled like “patchouli oil and weed,” in reference to her hair. Although Rancic intended it to be a joke she received a huge backlash from the public.

Barbie has been working on the doll for months and Zendaya took to Instagram to make the big reveal. She captioned the photo, “When I was little I couldn’t find a Barbie that looked like me, my…how times have changed. The first video is about two young boys who spend a lot of time together playing, laughing and going on adventures. They realize as they are growing older they develop romantic feelings for one another. The video ends with a steamy kiss between Sivan and his love interest.

The second video “Fools” starts exactly where the first one left off and shows the two guys being intimate until Sivan’s love interest’s father walks in on them. Giuliana Rancic is Set to Transition her Position on E!

E! New’s Giuliana Rancic has confirmed she is transitioning from her day-to-day position.

image

Rancic has been covering red carpets with E! for the last decade and has brought us some great moments and some brow-raising comments. The most recent was earlier this year when the co-host made a comment about Disney star Zendaya Coleman’s dreaded hair at the Oscars saying it looked as if she smelled like, “patchouli oil and weed.” This caused both long time co-host Kelly Osbourne and new co-host Kathy Griffin to both resign from Fashion Police.

image

“For more than a decade, I was fortunate enough to play a role in the success of E! News and will miss my family at the show. At the same time, I am excited to not only continue as host of two major franchises on E! but also executive produce the aspirational new show Rich in Faith for Oxygen as well as take my wine and clothing lines to the next level. This is such a thrilling time for me and I thank the gang at E! for understanding my desire to embark on this next chapter in my life,” said Rancic in a statement.

Rancic will begin her transition starting Aug. 10, but still remain on Live From the Red Carpet and Fashion Police that is set to return with co-host Brad Goreski and Joan Rivers’ daughter Melissa Rivers on Aug. 31.

Five Short Reasons Why Zendaya is the Bomb!

For those of you that have slept on Zendaya Coleman here is five short reasons why she’s the bomb!

image

1. She’s always very humble.

Zendaya was offered the role of Aaliyah in the Wendy Williams biopic “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B”, but declined the role respectfully shortly after.

“Zendaya is no longer involved in the project. Aaliyah has always been an inspiration to Zendaya. She was honored to portray her and pay tribute to her. If she is going to do it she wants to do it right.” sources close to Zendaya said in a statement.

Good move on Zendaya’s part because the move completely flopped, but she didn’t want to be apart of a project if she knew she wouldn’t do her idol justice with her talents.  As a young actress, dancer and singer she knows her strengths and weakness when it comes to taking on different roles and knows when they can be used. This could have been an easy situation for her to get a big head but she remained humble. This is just one of many examples.

2. She can pull off ANY hairstyle, literally everything!

and that’s not even half of them!
3. She can hold her own when it comes to controversy

When Zendaya was called out by ENews’ Guilianna Rancic for her hair looking like she smelled like “patchouli oil and weed” she took to social media and put out a brilliant statement. She explained her reasoning behind her long locks while remaining professional and understanding. That’s a lot to say for most 18 year olds.

4.  She is one of the very few Disney stars that can actually dance…

5. And she she is super down to earth.

Zendaya is always giving us tons of sass in her tweets and Instagram photos. She is always interacting with her fans and it’s nice to see that she is being a normal teenager. Also, her lip syncing car videos are hilarious! Check them out below!
