Artist Spotlight: Porter Robinson

To all my glamorous people and music lovers! Although I don’t have an exact favorite music genre to listen to, I love going out and exploring on new music. Every once in a while it’s nice to get away from all of the mainstream music.  So quite recently, a friend from work recommended me this artist to listen to. I have been hooked since then. For all you EDM fans, this ones for you, here’s my pick for music artist of the week.

Porter Robinson is an American DJ, record producer, and musician from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He specializes in electro house, dubstep, and synthpop music. A majority of his influences come from Japanese culture, Japanese anime, and gaming which he integrates into his music. Since 2010, he has been gaining popularity all over the country and was recognized overseas as a one of the music industry’s leading electronic DJs and producers. He collaborated with multiple DJs and music artists on the nation’s top hits. One you may know is Zedd’s “Clarity.”

In 2014, Robinson made his debut album “Worlds” through Astralwerks and Virgin EMI. Since that time, he was on hiatus with the purpose of producing new music. He collaborated with Madeon to produce “Shelter” and the single was released on August 11, 2016.

On October 18, Robinson collaborated with A-1 Pictures and Crunchyroll to release a new Japanese anime music video “Shelter.” The story tells of a 17-year-old girl named Rin, who lives alone in the confinements of an empty virtual space. She takes control of that virtual reality and with her vivid imagination, creates a world of her own. During the process, she discovers an important aspect of her past and its key help her move forward in the future.

What attracts people to his music is his ability to not only incorporate different elements in tune with the music he creates, but his ability to have his music tell a story and to give it depth and meaning in his tracks. His music is highly praised for its worldly difference from other DJs and for its Japanese-inspired synchronicity.

If you would you like to listen more of Robinson’s music, “Worlds” is available on most digital download sites, such as iTunes and Spotify. If you want to check out more on Robinson, visit his website here or his YouTube channel.

Listen to Robinson’s music and let me know in the comments below on your favorite tracks! Or tweet it at @GlamorousPaper!

Austin City Limits: The Coachella of Texas

acl_15thanniv_644v5

Austin City Limits is a three day music festival located in Austin, Texas. Austin is known for its amazing food, The University of Texas at Austin, live music, and hipster attitude. This year, the festival is celebrating its 15th year anniversary over two weekends. Some major artists that will be there are The Chainsmokers, Flume, Kendrick Lamar, M83, Radiohead, Mumford & Sons, and many more.  To add to the music, local favorite restaurants serve up some unique and delicious food. A few popular stops include Amy’s Ice Creams, Torchy’s Tacos, Tiff’s Treats, and Mighty Cone.

Since I’m originally from San Antonio, Texas, (which is about an hour south of Austin) here’s a local’s perspective. My first time going to Austin City Limits (ACL) I was a junior in high school. It was one of the best weekends of my life. I went with a giant group of friends, dressed like a typical trendy teen, and enjoyed myself for every single second of it. My favorite part was being seventh row for Kendrick Lamar. I sat on a friend’s shoulders, and looked back to see 100, 000 people behind me. This year will be my third year to go to the festival!! With the great memories I’ve already made, I’m extremely excited to be able to attend again.

So how does ACL seem like Coachella? Being a student at the University of California at Los Angeles, I attended the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April. (I’ve already bought my ticket for 2017!) Coachella and Austin City Limits have many things in common. I describe ACL as the ‘Coachella of Texas’ when telling people about it for the first time. Both festivals have similar artists playing to huge crowds on a giant field, boho styled attendees, delicious food trucks, and easygoing vibes. As a veteran of both music festivals, I can say that even though they’re inherently similar. While they’re both very similar, you need to attend both to really understand the experience of each weekend.

If you’re ever in Austin during the beginning of October, have $250 lying around, and love a good time, I highly recommend going to the Coachella of Texas, the Austin City Limits music festival.

Have any of your Glamorous people ever been to ACL? If so, comment below and tell me if you had a mind-blowing experience like I did at Kendrik Lamar! Or tweet @GlamorousPaper your favorite festivals looks from your past events!

For those who are familiar with this bewitching world- welcome back! For those who have never stepped into this domain, you are in for a magical time!

This past Wednesday, Warner Brothers Pictures released the final trailer of the anticipated movie, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”  This is the first spin-off film from the Harry Potter book and film franchise. These spin offs focus on a series of phenomenon that occurred 55 years before the events of the famous boy wizard.

In this special spin-off, we take a look inside the Wizarding world set in the late 1920s. Newt Scamander, (famed Magizooligist and author of the Hogwarts textbook, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) finds himself in the midst of catching and acquiring magical creatures that he brought from London and accidentally set loose in the heart of New York City. Will Scamander and his friends be able to capture all the magical beasts that are running wild? Or will something more sinister be waiting for them deep amongst this gloomy city?

With the script-writing debut of Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling herself; Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne playing the lead role of Newt Scamander; and the guidance of David Yates, director of the last four Harry Potter films; there’s no doubt that this film is the top must-see movies of the season. Not to mention there are high expectations were made into the making of this film. This is the first Harry Potter universe film since “The Deathly Hallows Part 2” in 2011 and it is also the first film out of the Fantastic Beasts trilogy. Due to its popular demand, Harry Potter fans from all around eagerly await the for the film premiere.

The Wow, The Meh, and The Cringey

The MTV Movie Awards has never been one to take itself too seriously. It’s for sure no Academy Awards or Golden Globes, especially with its emphasis on flashy effects, big-budget blockbusters, and younger audience appeal. To kick it off this year, MTV decided to host the awards outdoors on the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank, CA as opposed to the traditional theater venue, a risky move that was ultimately fun and innovative. Nevertheless, sometimes it outdoes itself in jaw-droppers and head-scratchers. Here are few of the most exciting moments of the night, whether spectacular or not.

WOW: Co-Hosts Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart Recreate Mad Max in the Coolest Entrance Ever

MEH: Cursing Up a Storm and D*ck Jokes

The hosts never shied away from throwing in a swear every now and then, dropping F-bombs left and right. One of them being in reference to Leonardo diCaprio and his character’s encounter with a bear in The Revenant. Don’t watch with youngsters if you want to keep them pure.

CRINGEY: Teen Moms Joke

Zac Efron, Adam DeVine, and Anna Kendrick participated in a bit that at best falls flat and at worst makes fun of teen moms and MTV’s show 16 and Pregnant. In an effort to promote the three actors’ upcoming movie, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, the involves Anna setting up a dating audition for the two guys, but instead of the girls she picked out coming on stage, actors pretending to be pregnant teens come up instead. Like DeVine’s expression throughout the bit indicated, this joke was just distasteful.

Lots of other fun things like Alexander Skarsgård presenting an award pantsless, Rebel Wilson and Adam DeVine’s kiss, and The Lonely Island’s jiggy Will Smith Tribute happened too, but we’ll forever be scarred by that awful song about Leo and the bear.

Ned’s Declassified Life Survival Guide!

If you’re a 90’s kid or a 00’s kid you looked to this guy for advice on all things middle school (sometimes even high school!).

As the star of the popular Nickelodeon TV show Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, Devon Werkheiser helped us navigate the turbulent waters of crazy teachers, gym class, group projects, crushes, and friendships that make up our public school system. With his two best friends, Cookie and Moze, he did the impossible: create a guide that will help you survive school.

The show ran for three years helping kids all over the country not only survive but conquer school. Some of my favorite tips include:

  • Get a haircut 2 weeks before school starts so it can grow in.
  • Don’t be afraid to raise your hand. It doesn’t mean you’re dumb when you raise your hand you just get interested.
  • If your crush doesn’t like you remember you could still be friends.
  • Don’t stress, or you’ll make a mess.
  • Don’t like something? Don’t complain, change it.
  • If you’re not popular in the top ten, you’re popular in your top ten.
  • Be confident, be grateful, not jealous.

Now, we all wish we could have good old Ned back with a holy guide of tips for high school and college (trust me, I could use a few), but Nickelodeon is probably not going to revive the show anytime soon. It would be awesome getting the actors back together considering how much everyone has grown over the years though.

And my personal favorite:

Luckily, Devon Werkheiser, who played Ned, heard and answered our prayers with a web series of his own called Devon’s Life Survival Guide, a YouTube series of general life tips. With the first episode uploaded on Jan. 25, 2016, the weekly webisodes deal with a variety of topics such as productivity, spirituality, and wellness and take in questions from viewers themselves.

“Hello. I’m Devon Werkheiser. It’s been years since I’ve helped you survive middle school.”

Cue the feels.

One of Devon’s first tips is really profound and inspiring: “Choose your growth.” You can learn and grow from anything you experience. Whether it was a bad or great situation, you were changed from it so it is up to you to learn and improve from what you experienced. “It’s a choice to be an active creator of your life or a victim to it.” Preach it, Devon!

Watch the first episode here and make sure to comment so he can answer your questions!

The nostalgia is too real with this. If you’re looking to take a walk down memory lane to afternoons on the couch eating Gushers and watching Ned, Cookie, and Moze get into another round of crazy antics or you’re just really into conquering your life, watch Devon’s videos. Just like back in 2004, the tips are as helpful as ever. Thanks, Devon.

He also writes and performs original music which he uploads to YouTube as well so check him out!
