Austin City Limits is a three day music festival located in Austin, Texas. Austin is known for its amazing food, The University of Texas at Austin, live music, and hipster attitude. This year, the festival is celebrating its 15th year anniversary over two weekends. Some major artists that will be there are The Chainsmokers, Flume, Kendrick Lamar, M83, Radiohead, Mumford & Sons, and many more.  To add to the music, local favorite restaurants serve up some unique and delicious food. A few popular stops include Amy’s Ice Creams, Torchy’s Tacos, Tiff’s Treats, and Mighty Cone.

Since I’m originally from San Antonio, Texas, (which is about an hour south of Austin) here’s a local’s perspective. My first time going to Austin City Limits (ACL) I was a junior in high school. It was one of the best weekends of my life. I went with a giant group of friends, dressed like a typical trendy teen, and enjoyed myself for every single second of it. My favorite part was being seventh row for Kendrick Lamar. I sat on a friend’s shoulders, and looked back to see 100, 000 people behind me. This year will be my third year to go to the festival!! With the great memories I’ve already made, I’m extremely excited to be able to attend again.

So how does ACL seem like Coachella? Being a student at the University of California at Los Angeles, I attended the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April. (I’ve already bought my ticket for 2017!) Coachella and Austin City Limits have many things in common. I describe ACL as the ‘Coachella of Texas’ when telling people about it for the first time. Both festivals have similar artists playing to huge crowds on a giant field, boho styled attendees, delicious food trucks, and easygoing vibes. As a veteran of both music festivals, I can say that even though they’re inherently similar. While they’re both very similar, you need to attend both to really understand the experience of each weekend.

If you’re ever in Austin during the beginning of October, have $250 lying around, and love a good time, I highly recommend going to the Coachella of Texas, the Austin City Limits music festival.

Have any of your Glamorous people ever been to ACL? If so, comment below and tell me if you had a mind-blowing experience like I did at Kendrik Lamar! Or tweet @GlamorousPaper your favorite festivals looks from your past events!

Canadian Music Festival Bans Headdresses

In a country where there are over 600 nationally recognized aboriginal groups, Canada is quite sensitive to mockery or general cultural appropriation of Native traditions. And now Montreal’s musical festival Osheaga is cracking down by eliminating headdresses to be worn.  In the festival’s website, it displays a rule that traditional First Nations headdresses are banned and will be confiscated upon entry.

Even the name Osheaga itself ironically references the native groups. During a miscommunication with local Mohawk people, Jacques Cartier (one of the first groups of european settlers in Canada) waved his hands about in order to try to talk with the natives, and misunderstood the word “O She Ha Ga” or “people of shaking hands” with the name of the area.

As an indigenous rights enthusiast, I am overjoyed by Osheaga’s zero-tolerance rule. Too often music festivals like Coachella or Bonaroo see dozens of people clad in artificial or even worse- authentic ceremonial clothing pieces. In celebrity news, Vanessa Hudgens received major hate after she was spotted wearing a headdress at the 2014 Coachella Music Festival.  Speaking for my friends with native roots, this is wrong. Headdresses are an important part in many First Nations ceremonies and display a  sign of leadership that needs to be respected.

Although some have criticized the rule, it is clear that the aboriginal groups of Canada side with Osheaga. Never would a truly indigenous person where an item to a festival in the first place. Niigaanwewidam James Sinclair who heads the Department of Native American Studies at University of Manitoba has stated that everyone knows the headdress is “strictly ceremonial” and would never be worn as a fashion statement.

I strongly applaud the efforts made by Osheaga and other music festivals that are beginning to take a more serious  approach in sending an important message about cultural appropriation. Learning to respect a culturally and spiritually significant symbol for Native Americans can become a large step in discussing further sensitive issues with  aboriginal groups throughout North America.

Sunday night marked the long anticipated season five premiere of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Joe Dempsie plays Gendry, friend of Arya and illegitimate child of former king, Robert Baratheon. Joe, always the jokester, pretended not to know what was on TV Sunday night, and asked fans for suggestions on what to watch. Hopefully we’ll see more of Gendry this season!

Another Game of Thrones cast member made headlines on Twitter this week. Fan favorite Nikolaj Coster-Waldau finally jumped on the bandwagon and joined Twitter. Nikolaj plays the morally ambiguous but extremely handsome Jaime Lannister. Surely there will be some great tweets to come from him.

TV host and comedian Billy Eichner decided to comment on the issue that was definitely the most talked about of the week: Madonna and Drake’s on-stage kiss at Coachella. While everyone was freaking out, trying to figure out if Drake really was that disgusted by Madonna, Billy wrote a snappy tweet that made fun of the whole incident. You go, Billy.

Saying, “Can’t wait for you to be our guest,” Josh Gad tweeted out the first picture of the Beauty and the Beast cast. Everyone was already very excited for this movie, but after seeing this picture, fans can hardly contain their excitement.

This week on Lip Sync Battle it’s Anna Kendrick versus John Krasinski. These two actors are hilarious so it should be a great show. There’s a clip circulating of one of Anna’s performances. While singing One Direction’s “Steal My Girl,” Anna reveals she is wearing a t-shirt with a picture of her and Emily Blunt in a heart; Emily is John’s wife. The clip is absolutely hysterical and it looks like it will be an episode you can’t miss.

Finally, while promoting the new Avengers movie, coming out May 1, Chris Hemsworth paid a visit to his wax figure that doesn’t really look anything like him. Buzzfeed circulated this hilarious picture. In other Avengers news, the cast had a guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live where they were put in teams and competed in Avengers Family Feud. Sunday Paper: April 12, 2015

Here’s a recap of the most popular stories of the week in your Sunday Paper!

It appears that flowers aren’t the only thing blooming in Hollywood this Spring. Tons of celebs are having babies, getting pregnant, announcing engagements or tying the knot and it’s exciting to see. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds welcomed their baby girl James who apparently has three god mothers. Lively’s co-star in “The Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants” Amber Tamblyn, joked that Aexis Bledel, America Ferrara and herself are James’ godmothers.

“I never named them godmothers. They’re my dear friends. I would say my baby has lots of fairy godmothers,” Lively said in an interview for her new movie “The Age of Adaline.”

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake have welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Silas Randall Timberlake. Jill Duggar also gave birth to a baby boy. Robert Pattinson got engaged to his girlfriend FKA Twigs, Kendrick Lamar announced his engagement to his high school sweetheart Whitney Alford and so many more. Congrats to all the new families and couples!

Noah Cyrus, Miley Cyrus’ little sister, came under a magnifying glass when her PETA AD went viral this past week. We all have seen what Miley has done in the past, but is her sister headed down the same road? I don’t think we have to worry about that. The ad features Noah lying on a table “lifeless” with her chest opened and organs exposed. The ad is to protest against animals being dissected for classroom projects.

image

“Because I love all animals so much, people should realize they don’t have to cut into something to learn about it. You should ask your teacher for other humane alternatives… You’ll learn so much more off of the computer. If you have the other option, why not take it?” Noah said in a statement to PETA.

Festival season is in full-swing and the stars are aligning for the event. The popular festival “Coachella” is known to be full of upcoming artists and well known ones, but has also gotten popular for the fashion. Stars like Beyonce, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Fergie, Bella Thorne and so many more have been stepping out in crop tops, flower prints, maxi dresses and the all too important flower crowns. Several of these celebs have taken to Instagram and Twitter posting pictures capturing the fun and it looks like one heck of a time.

National Siblings day was also this past week and tons of celebs posted photos of them with their sibs and it couldn’t get better. Tons of celebs flocked to Instagram and Twitter to post cute pictures and videos of reminisce with their siblings. Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Alba, Cindy Crawford and Eva Mendes are some of the cutest I have seen. Check them out!

Music Festival Season Survival List

coachellaferriswheelSpring marks the beginning of music festival season.  We are gearing up for Coachella kicking off on the weekend of April 10. While music festivals are filled with great music, delicious food and memories that will last a lifetime, it is important to make sure you follow some important tips on how to stay healthy and happy under the festival sun.

There are a few items that are essential to music festival survival- water, sunscreen and comfortable shoes. Bring a water bottle to keep yourself hydrated in the hot weather.  Sunscreen is a must because you will get burned and it will be very uncomfortable for the rest of the week, so just lather up!  Some girl’s try to put their fashion foot forward and wear wedges or heeled booties, but I am assure you, you will regret that decision! There is a lot of walking and a lot of people dancing and jumping to the beat!  Try to avoid open toe shoes to keep those perfectly pedicured nails safe. Another couple of items you may want to bring along are a bandana or scarf to keep from inhaling dust from the dessert.  At night it can be especially windy and you won’t want to be coughing up dust all night long.  There are a few great mobile apps to be sure to download before Coachella weekend.  First start by downloading the Coachella App to have access to Friend Finder, Schedule Sharing and Shuttle Tracking. Those are some of the best features of the app to help make your weekend run a little more smoothly.  If you have VIP tickets it is beneficial to download the application Reserve to book a table at some of the famous pop up restaurants at the festival.  It is worth it to have a plan of which sets are your must see shows and schedule food and bathroom breaks around it to beat the crowd the best you can.

Here’s to our first Coachella update, follow our tips, have fun and stay safe! Comment below or tweet us at #Glamorouspaper!
