The Most Anticipated Films of 2017

2016 isn’t even over yet and people are already anticipating the big films of 2017. That is with good reason. It’s no wonder why so many people are hanging on the coming year’s releases since this past year has delivered a number of box office hits. Let’s take a look at a few of the movies that stole our focus out of sheer blind excitement!

  1. “Beauty and the Beast (2017)”

Who doesn’t love a classic romance story, especially one that was a part of your childhood? As creative as they are successful, Disney has done an amazing job recreating their classic cartoon films into live action movies. Next in line is “Beauty and the Beast (2017)”. I know Disney won’t disappoint because there is a cast that includes the likes of Emma Watson.

“Wonder Woman (2017)”

After decades of watching male-dominated movies, where comics-to-movies are concerned, the arrival of the Wonder Woman film is a long time coming. We catch a glimpse of her in the Batman vs. Superman film, but it is only an appetizer. Now we await the main course! This is a movie audiences don’t mind waiting for. But many comic book and movie fans demand that at the end, perfection is delivered. With Gal Gadot as the leading character of the film, perfection won’t be a hard feat to live up to.

  1. Dunkirk (2017)

Dunkirk is still one of the most anticipated films of 2017. It’s a teaser with a trailer of little over a minute that gives away nothing eluding to the plot. Christopher Nolan, director of the “Dark Knight” triology, “Inception (2010)”, “Interstellar (2014)” and other mind-blowing films, treks into uncharted territory for his latest project. So what is Dunkirk? Well, the movie is set in World War II. What happens? All we know it that it has something to do with 300,000 allied troops being surrounded by enemy forces during the evacuation of Dunkirk.

  1. Justice League (2017)

The main reason this film is so anticipated is for the failure of its predecessor, “Batman v Superman (2016)”. Through this disappointment, those same fans are looking onto the newest DC comics’ edition with both hope and dread. Based on the trailer alone, “Justice League (2017)” may be saved by the added comedic characters and all-around great cast. One can only hope that after so many years of waiting that director, Zach Snyder, will do the Justice League some Justice.

  1. “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2017)”

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” is a film that many moviegoers didn’t see coming. That’s because its been four years since “Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)”. That is where the ‘final chapter’ picks up. If you’re a fan of the franchise, you know that its one of the longest ongoing series. Quite honestly, we’re sad to see it end!! But what can be more gratifying than watching main character, Alice, return to where the Resident Evil story started: Raccoon City, for a final stand against apocalyptic evil. Major girl power, bring it Alice!

  1. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)”

Will the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise ever put an end to their legacy? Probably not. There is really no reason for the story line to cease as long as Johnny Depp is still around to play Jack Sparrow. The franchise has never managed to disappoint. They always dominates the box office with each release.  As a result, they continue dominating our hearts with the comedic but dramatic alternate universe.

  1. Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2017)

As the third film in its series, “Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2017)” is arguably the most anticipated film of the series, so far. The Death Cure picks up right after Scorch Trials. A band of loyal friends continue to evade a wicked group of scientists whom want the children to find a cure for a disease that wiped out the majority of the world. No trailer has been released, as of yet, but fans are still stumbling over themselves in excitement for the third film.

2016 may have been a year for some hot films, but 2017 is already winning and the race has yet to begin.

Halloween Costume Ideas for the Procrastinators

Halloween; a time when the leaves have all changed color, the air is crisper and stores are already shoving Christmas down customers’ throats. Halloween is a big deal for a lot of people- bigger than most major holidays. And, what’s not to love? Halloween is the one night where you can be somebody entirely different, or, finally be yourself. In many ways, Halloween is a night of ‘anything goes’.

If you’re like me, the moment November 1st hits, you’re right back to counting down the days until the next Halloween. You’ve got your costume ideas down to a select few. By the time summer rolls around, you’re stuck eagerly staring at your finished product in the closet for four months.

Not being overly prepared for the night of sweets, horror and the year’s most popular movie characters doesn’t make you any less of a fan. In fact, most people wait until last minute to even consider the possibilities of their potential Halloween costumes. The last minute decision can leave your gas tank on ‘E’ as you try desperately to sort through the leftovers at costumes stores.

So, in the spirit of creativity and being eco-friendly, here are some tips for all you last minute party-goers.

1. Paper Bag Princess

intern-paper

Arguably the easiest and cheapest costume to throw together, is the “Paper Bag Princess.” It is the ultimate last minute assemble for story book fans or those with simple but creative taste. To execute, go to your local grocery store for a few large paper bags, or a few packs of paper lunch packs. Wallah! You’re a “Paper Bag Princess”!

2. Zombie Barbie

Putting a sick twist to a universal child’s toy, the “Zombie Barbie” is perfect for those who know how to work their magic with a few makeup brushes. Cheap alternatives to the most expensive of professional makeup to make this costume are toilet paper and eye-lash adhesive. You can grab a cheap wig at your local discount store, or go natural. Either way, you’re guaranteed to make a big impression on the general public if you walk out of your home looking equal parts Barbie-beautiful and cringe-worthy.

3. Lara Croft

intern-lara

If you’re into films or video games, or just have a general appreciation for all things ‘badass’ then Lara Croft from “Tomb Raider” is the costume for you. Played by Angelina Jolie, Lara Croft is one of the most iconic female movie characters. She has the strength and attitude of her male peers and the sexiness to back up all that sass. Her costume is a lot easier than her personality, though. Most of her costume consists of clothing and accessories you probably already have lying around the house. The smaller pieces, like gun holsters and weapons can be bought at your local dollar store or Halloween supply shop. If you’re feeling super nifty, you can even use your own belts to create a more vintage look for the costume’s straps.

4. Solar System

With a couple quick picks at your local craft store, nothing too fancy and nothing too expensive, you can show off your astral-love by sticking the solar system to your body. Your costume will be out of this world. Yes, I went there. What’s more? It’s the perfect costume for perfectly bad puns and unsuccessful but admirable pick-up lines. Use it to your advantage, because you’ll have the world wrapped around your finger (pun #2, you’re welcome).

5. #Basic

When you can catch the scent of pumpkin spice coming from your local coffee shop before the first leaf of autumn falls, this costume has your name all over it. Beware, this costume is an invite for some of the harshest critics but you definitely get kudos for being creative and crafty. So if you’re brave, or dedicated enough to your favorite caffeinated beverage, go for it! You won’t get another chance for another 364 days.

6. Video Game Characters

Mario and Luigi. The dynamic duo. You’d no doubt struggle to find a person who doesn’t have child memories that include the red-clad and green-clad brothers of Nintendo. This costume idea can extend to a fellow procrastinator and the final product is both cute and significant to majority of your peers.

7. Old School

intern-classic

Do you remember the days when grabbing a broom and a witch hat was all the rage? Or, maybe you were more of a plaid shirt wearing, hay stuffing kind of trick-or-treater. Those were the days of simplicity and the single-minded purpose of getting as many sweets packed into your pillow case. There’s nothing wrong with kicking it old school, either. Find ways to spice up an ordinary costume and make it more original.

Remember, anything goes. Judgement is like a whisper in the wind for this one night, so don’t waste it. With so many DIY tutorials, it’s easy to make the most rudimentary costume, or the most intricate, without scraping your pennies together and regretting it the morning after. Nothing is impossible with the power of internet and your own imagination.

The Presidential Contender You Didn’t Know About

Meet presidential candidate, Jill Stein. Stein is a woman that has proven through determination, hard work and steadfast morals that overcoming great obstacles is possible. She’s a spitfire in face-to-face interviews. She backs up her verbal beliefs, sometimes, even at the cost of her own freedom. What’s more? She has the potential to be our next president. That’s right. If you thought Hillary was the only female contender, meet the Green Party’s mighty rep.

While many citizens have raved over the positive effect that a female president could have on our country, many fear that Clinton is not the best choice. As it stands, a great deal of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump supporters have chosen whom to support in an attempt to accept the “lesser of two evils.” Many voters are confused as to where our two main candidates stand. While others have an understanding that is clouded by the fear of the election’s limitations and the potential danger of their vote. As a result, this election is arguably one of the most controversial and (for lack of a better word) ridiculous presidential elections.

The decision process is all the more frustrating for voters who refuse to offer their support to either party. The problem is that not many people know about Jill Stein. Media coverage of Jill Stein has flown under the radar of most major media outlets. As consequence it has flown under the radar of the undecided and hesitantly-settling voters.

Now, acknowledging the lack of awareness to our third-party candidates is not to say that they’re any better Clinton or Trump. Nor does it claim  that Jill Stein is irrevocably the best option. Stein, like many before her, has a lot left to prove and a lifetime of choices to defend. In many ways, the battle has yet to begin for Stein; the surface merely skimmed. But, Stein is making headway in where she stands environmentally, politically and, honestly, in every way.

So why don’t we know about her?

With all the media frenzy focusing on the animosity between Clinton and Trump, there isn’t a lot of spotlight left to go around. The recent debate left us no better off. I felt more confused than before the childish back-and-forth. Now I have more questions than I thought possible. I had a hard time comprehending the small details when the main subjects felt like they were being shoved in my face. How can we possibly make a decision that will have international consequences without knowing all of our options?

Media coverage of the election is like answering a test where only two of four possible answers are shown. As a voter, you are expected to make a choice based off what you can see. At best, its a shot in the dark and one we must live with. Not only for the next four years, but for generations after.

It is incredibly important to understand each choice and to make the one that best reflects what you stand for. We have to know what everyone is bringing to the table as a potential future President of the United States.

Stein, for one, is a supporter of women’s rights and the protection/equality of the LGBTQIA+ community. She is pro-choice in all things revolving women’s healthcare and supports equal pay for women and gay marriage. She is also a firm supporter in the Black Lives Movement. Stein acknowledges the violations of cops and the existence of racism and discrimination that persists in today’s society.

She backs up her beliefs, too. Jill Stein became the first presidential candidate to make a stand on the Dakota Access Pipeline. She earned herself an arrest warrant after spray painting a mark of support to the water defenders of Scared Stone Camp. The Nation, made a great point in saying, “Surely, an intervention by Clinton would get more attention. But the intervention by Stein—and the attention to the arrest threat she now faces—offers a reminder of the consequential role that independent and third-party candidates can and should play in our politics.” Stein knows that these changes cannot be made overnight. Her making a stand and raising awareness is half the battle even if her power is limited now.

So maybe you won’t change your mind. Maybe you’ve already got the bumper sticker to show off your undying support, or maybe Stein will only add to your indecision. Whether you want to go green, be stronger together, or make America green again, do it with no regrets and no ignorance.

The Love Wall located on Abbot Kinney in Venice, California

When people think of famous walls in Los Angeles, they usually think of the pink wall or the angel wings located on Melrose Avenue. However, there is another location for artsy walls to use as backdrops for your Instagram posts. Abbot Kinney is a famous street in Venice, California. It is known for the amazing restaurants, shops, and artwork. For instance, Intelligentsia Coffee is a great spot for drinking some of the best coffee in the world. Or LF is the perfect shopping spot for incredibly cute (but also expensive) clothing. Abbot Kinney’s secret gem though is the artwork painted on the walls of its buildings. But in between all of these great shops is the artwork! As you walk along the street admiring, you’ll come across several murals that are all as unique as they come.

One of the most popular murals is The Love Wall. On the Love Wall you can see a display of colorful hearts covering a white wall. Another, just a little ways down the street, is a section of a wall covered with Buddhas in differing shades of blue. Across the street, a black and white horizontal mural of palm trees is painted next to a portrait of an old man. One of the more colorful pieces is a geometric mural. It is a combination of red, orange, yellow, blue and green sections pieced together. Some murals also feature animals. One has a leopard with antlers and another is a column of rabbits. As you head towards the beach, you can see a ocean front building covered in huge, beautiful flowers of all different colors.
