Why Pokémon Go Became Popular

Despite being four months after its release, players’ obsession with Pokémon Go has yet to fade away. Popularity of the game struck  like lightening. Still, one question remains: why did Pokémon Go become so popular? Since its universal takeover, Pokémon Go‘s popularity is steadily defending its spot at the top. Around the world, game fanatics of all ages find themselves immersed in an alternate universe. You can imagine how shocking this might be to most young adults and older players. Why? Well it wasn’t so long ago that Pokémon (the original card game) got more upturned noses and teasing than five star reviews. But now, players are no longer few and far in-between. Instead, they come in hoards.

At the party after my First Holy Communion, I decided to use my gifted money on something special. Pokémon cards. Not two minutes after I left the pharmacy to go back to my party, the unopened pack of cards with slapped out of my hands and onto the ground. “Only weirdos play that,” my friend informed me, and that was that. Pokémon became a taboo game, in my mind. But, like most things in fashion and entertainment, it made an unexpected turn around. Just like skinny jeans, Converse and comic books – society would come to realize that their initial judgment may have been unfair. Go figure.
So what happened to make Pokémon Go go from undesirable to the most downloaded game in the App Store?
For one, Pokémon Go is an entirely different approach to the game than the cards. Contrary to its predecessor, the Pokémon Go app offers interaction that is more reliant on technological advancements than an individual’s imagination. As a result, it’s got simple and instant satisfaction. In other words, Pokémon Go doesn’t require a whole lot of skill or effort. It’s as easy as walking around the neighborhood and flicking your finger over you’re phone’s screen. Pokemon captured. Mission accomplished. Consider yourself a success.
Timing also has a lot to do with the success of Pokémon Go. Since the game was released in July of 2016, in the midst of Summer vacation, it gave school kids a large amount of time to play the newly released app. Similarly, college students and adults of all ages have significantly more time to kill. So, Pokémon Go seems worth dedicating that free time to!
Pokémon Go is something of a gratifying escape from reality. Take, for example, some of the most popular games downloaded for handheld entertainment: Temple Run, Candy Crush, and Tetris. When there is time to kill, easy access games are the go-to. They save us from the silence and boredom of a train ride or early arrivals. (They also offer an alternative to staring at the ceiling after your plans have been canceled.) The convenience factor is just the hook. Once you bite, it’s hard to get off the line.
Let’s not forget that childhood sense of adventure. Maybe, subconsciously, there is a yearning inside of us to relive those childhood moments, even if they were discouraged by our peers. Maybe we all wanted to be more like Ash Misty and Brock. Pokémon Go players can finally fulfill those desires without the stigma of society, because it’s become a social norm.
Pokémon  Go brings people together. I’ll give the app that much. I’ve never seen crowds quite like that brought forth by a rare Pokémon find. Someone you normally pass by on the street, without a second thought, could end up right next to you.  And now they are your newest partner in crime, or should I say, partner in Pokémon hunting. It’s in our nature to seek out people who have similar interests. There is a level of comfort and connection we feel with those people once your spot that immediate similarity.
Talk about making friends in unexpected places. A backyard, and empty parking lot, or on the side of the road. Odd enough, right?
Since people already glued to their phones, Pokémon Go is just another stop somewhere between Instagram and checking emails. Whether it was the intention of the creators to bring life back to an underrated game or prove the frivolity of the human race, they succeeded both, and then some.

The Badass Females of Films and Books

Strength is defined as the quality or state of being physically strong. An underwhelming concept,
when you only skim the surface of its meaning. For me, strength is something that can reach a
mental, physical and emotional state. It can be one person, an entire nation or the entire world. It
can take you by surprise in your darkest moments- help you pull through with power you never
thought yourself capable of. But, it can disappear in the flash of a moment- as fleeting as an
autumn breeze. The individuals we see as “strong” can prove to be cowards, and those we deem
“weak” can tap into unimaginable courage. It is all a matter of perception and understanding of the
meaning of strength. And, as corny as it sounds, what we’re fighting for.

Strong, in both its purest and simplest form, female characters aren’t easy to come by. Be it in
films or books, some of the most well-known females roles have done irreversible damage to the
perception of women. Books and films often portray these strong females with a number of stereotypical roles and inescapable dependency. Such has a lasting effect on both the male and females population, even more so on our younger generations. Arts.Mic published an article “9 Harmful Stereotypes We Never Realized Our Favorite Disney Movies Taught Us.” This article gives readers a small taste of women being constantly forced into roles that affect how women are perceived and categorized in day-to-day life.

That’s right, that cute mermaid movie that taught us women should change their physical
appearance for a man at any cost, may have allowed females to believe that changing for someone was only a sign of love. Not to mention how that fanfiction, to book, to movie that took the world by storm with its ‘shady grey areas’ also taught readers that non-consensual BDSM was hot and may have normalized physically and mentally abusive relationships to its readers and viewers. These examples are only crumbs fallen from a large cake of inequality.
You could say that we’ve come a long way in today’s society- that females are put into parts with
more power and importance, but there is almost always a catch…

Almost…

Let’s take time to appreciate just a few of the films, television shows and books that did it right, and all the way right.
No short-cuts, no add-ins for romantic effect, no over-sexualization of the female body. Just pure
female badassery at its finest.

Unlike most of the women you’ll see in this list, Sarah Connor isn’t your typical badass straight off the bat. From damsel in distress, to kicking ass and taking names, Linda Hamilton brings true form to the concept of ‘fear no evil.’ Not even when that evil is a terrifying mass of steal and robotic intelligence. As the main protagonist of a film filled with menacing male characters, Sarah Connor gives them all a run for their money.
Don’t be fooled by Tom Cruise’s insistent presence in this film, because its human solider, Rita Vrataski, played by Emily Blunt, who steals the show. As a renowned human solider during a war against the Alien race, Rita is the first solider to experience the horror of reliving the same day, over and over again. From the moment Rita makes her first on screen appearance, she’s putting her male counterparts to shame. Of course Rita doesn’t just kick ass. She even mentors co-character, Cage, whom despite being your stereotypical ‘strong man’ can’t seem to make it through a day alive, without Rita’s intervention.

(Fast & Furious Franchise)
We all know the dangerous beauty that is, Michelle Rodriguez. Shes got a heart of gold, but don’t let that fool you. Michelle can cross her legs just as well as she can pack a punch. So when she signed on to play Letty Ortiz  in the Fast & Furious franchise, there was no denying the hurricane of self-confidence and ferocity that the audience had coming their way. After all, it takes a true badass like Rodriguez to play the on-screen equivalent. I think its safe to say that audiences weren’t disappointed.
As a book, “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” is arguably one of the most difficult to read. There is no beating around the bush, no subtle subtext that sympathizes with its reader’s tender emotions. No, this book is as unforgiving as it is magnificent. One of the many reasons for its unbeatable delivery? Lisbeth Salander. In both the book and the film adaptions, Salander defies normal expectations of female beauty and brings the ‘take it or leave it’ attitude to the next level. This crime-investigating computer wiz doesn’t need a man to save her. She’s got her own back and enough generosity to save her male counterparts, too.

Harry Potter is a hero, I’ll give you that much, but he wouldn’t have gotten very far without his best friend, Hermione Granger, saving his skin at every turn. As the most mature and intelligent of the “Potter Trio”, Granger shows her unending capacity for bravery through determination and loyalty to both her friends and the fight against evil. As selfless as she was bright, there is no shortage of reasons why Hermione Granger makes the list of badass female characters. Don’t believe me? Just take a look at Bustle’s article on a few of the reasons we all should learn from Hermione Granger.
Katniss Everdeen

So you may be wondering why there isn’t a dazzling picture of the ever-lovely, Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss Everdeen in the film adaptions of Suzanne Collin’s “The Hunger Games” trilogy. It’s simple, Katniss was her finest in the books. Don’t get me wrong, I sat in the theater and gushed over the flawless performance Lawrence gave and the way she brought life to Suzanne Collin’s beloved Girl on Fire. It was the changes they made to Katniss’s drive and personality that took away from her strengths. For one, the book version of Katniss Everdeen is interested in two things: staying alive and protecting her sister, Prim. Her love interests, Gale and Peeta, are little more background noise to the bigger picture . Shes willing to kill anyone and anything that poses a threat to her family and even uses Peeta’s romantic feelings for her, to save her own skin, with little regard (okay, no regard) for his feelings. She may not be nice, but you can’t say she isn’t a badass.

If only we could pay tribute to all of the badass females of film and literature. They date back centuries and they’re only growing in number with the passing of time. So, what badass female made your blood pump a little faster and your heart beat a little louder?

The Most Anticipated Films of 2017

2016 isn’t even over yet and people are already anticipating the big films of 2017. That is with good reason. It’s no wonder why so many people are hanging on the coming year’s releases since this past year has delivered a number of box office hits. Let’s take a look at a few of the movies that stole our focus out of sheer blind excitement!

  1. “Beauty and the Beast (2017)”

Who doesn’t love a classic romance story, especially one that was a part of your childhood? As creative as they are successful, Disney has done an amazing job recreating their classic cartoon films into live action movies. Next in line is “Beauty and the Beast (2017)”. I know Disney won’t disappoint because there is a cast that includes the likes of Emma Watson.

“Wonder Woman (2017)”

After decades of watching male-dominated movies, where comics-to-movies are concerned, the arrival of the Wonder Woman film is a long time coming. We catch a glimpse of her in the Batman vs. Superman film, but it is only an appetizer. Now we await the main course! This is a movie audiences don’t mind waiting for. But many comic book and movie fans demand that at the end, perfection is delivered. With Gal Gadot as the leading character of the film, perfection won’t be a hard feat to live up to.

  1. Dunkirk (2017)

Dunkirk is still one of the most anticipated films of 2017. It’s a teaser with a trailer of little over a minute that gives away nothing eluding to the plot. Christopher Nolan, director of the “Dark Knight” triology, “Inception (2010)”, “Interstellar (2014)” and other mind-blowing films, treks into uncharted territory for his latest project. So what is Dunkirk? Well, the movie is set in World War II. What happens? All we know it that it has something to do with 300,000 allied troops being surrounded by enemy forces during the evacuation of Dunkirk.

  1. Justice League (2017)

The main reason this film is so anticipated is for the failure of its predecessor, “Batman v Superman (2016)”. Through this disappointment, those same fans are looking onto the newest DC comics’ edition with both hope and dread. Based on the trailer alone, “Justice League (2017)” may be saved by the added comedic characters and all-around great cast. One can only hope that after so many years of waiting that director, Zach Snyder, will do the Justice League some Justice.

  1. “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2017)”

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” is a film that many moviegoers didn’t see coming. That’s because its been four years since “Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)”. That is where the ‘final chapter’ picks up. If you’re a fan of the franchise, you know that its one of the longest ongoing series. Quite honestly, we’re sad to see it end!! But what can be more gratifying than watching main character, Alice, return to where the Resident Evil story started: Raccoon City, for a final stand against apocalyptic evil. Major girl power, bring it Alice!

  1. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)”

Will the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise ever put an end to their legacy? Probably not. There is really no reason for the story line to cease as long as Johnny Depp is still around to play Jack Sparrow. The franchise has never managed to disappoint. They always dominates the box office with each release.  As a result, they continue dominating our hearts with the comedic but dramatic alternate universe.

  1. Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2017)

b32cdd26427751-563550a74a110

As the third film in its series, “Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2017)” is arguably the most anticipated film of the series, so far. The Death Cure picks up right after Scorch Trials. A band of loyal friends continue to evade a wicked group of scientists whom want the children to find a cure for a disease that wiped out the majority of the world. No trailer has been released, as of yet, but fans are still stumbling over themselves in excitement for the third film.

2016 may have been a year for some hot films, but 2017 is already winning and the race has yet to begin.

Austin City Limits: The Coachella of Texas

acl_15thanniv_644v5

Austin City Limits is a three day music festival located in Austin, Texas. Austin is known for its amazing food, The University of Texas at Austin, live music, and hipster attitude. This year, the festival is celebrating its 15th year anniversary over two weekends. Some major artists that will be there are The Chainsmokers, Flume, Kendrick Lamar, M83, Radiohead, Mumford & Sons, and many more.  To add to the music, local favorite restaurants serve up some unique and delicious food. A few popular stops include Amy’s Ice Creams, Torchy’s Tacos, Tiff’s Treats, and Mighty Cone.

Since I’m originally from San Antonio, Texas, (which is about an hour south of Austin) here’s a local’s perspective. My first time going to Austin City Limits (ACL) I was a junior in high school. It was one of the best weekends of my life. I went with a giant group of friends, dressed like a typical trendy teen, and enjoyed myself for every single second of it. My favorite part was being seventh row for Kendrick Lamar. I sat on a friend’s shoulders, and looked back to see 100, 000 people behind me. This year will be my third year to go to the festival!! With the great memories I’ve already made, I’m extremely excited to be able to attend again.

So how does ACL seem like Coachella? Being a student at the University of California at Los Angeles, I attended the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April. (I’ve already bought my ticket for 2017!) Coachella and Austin City Limits have many things in common. I describe ACL as the ‘Coachella of Texas’ when telling people about it for the first time. Both festivals have similar artists playing to huge crowds on a giant field, boho styled attendees, delicious food trucks, and easygoing vibes. As a veteran of both music festivals, I can say that even though they’re inherently similar. While they’re both very similar, you need to attend both to really understand the experience of each weekend.

If you’re ever in Austin during the beginning of October, have $250 lying around, and love a good time, I highly recommend going to the Coachella of Texas, the Austin City Limits music festival.

Have any of your Glamorous people ever been to ACL? If so, comment below and tell me if you had a mind-blowing experience like I did at Kendrik Lamar! Or tweet @GlamorousPaper your favorite festivals looks from your past events!
