The Art of Chinese Face Mapping

Hello to all my lovely and beautiful Glamorous People! Let’s face it (literally): we all have struggles and insecurities about our acne. For real- who doesn’t? It’s totally normal and it’s a part of our human development. Recently, I noticed I started to breakout a few pimples around my T-zone area- mostly around my chin, mouth, and the center of my forehead area. It’s probably due to lack of sleep, stress, irregular eating schedules and a bunch of other factors that cause these red, painful bumps on my face.

That’s pretty easy to point out how you might have gotten acne. But did you know where acne might pop-up, can be a certain part of your immune system that causes it? This is called Chinese face mapping. Chinese face mapping is a longstanding, Eastern medicine practice used to determine how healthy your body. What it does is indicate the parts of the face that corresponds with a specific internal organ. If acne, pimple, or discoloration pops up on certain places on your face, it usually means that there is a deficiency with that internal organ. The only way to make it go away is to make changes in your diet and lifestyle.

There are many places on the face where it centers on different organs, but here’s a quick overview on the different parts of the face that indicates internal organ problems. (Plus, a bit of anatomy 101, just for you cool, biology geeks out there!)

Forehead (Above the brows)

The forehead indicates the gallbladder and bladder in the body. These two organs, apart from the kidney, act as a filter for the body by getting rid of the toxins and other foreign materials that shouldn’t be good for the immune system. If breakouts occur there, eat less processed or junk food and reduce the intake of fat in your diet. Instead, try to consume more organic and raw foods and probiotics. Getting enough sleep will also do the job.

Between the brows

This area, also including the middle part of the forehead, indicates the liver of the body. The liver is a main organ that acts as a filter along with the bladder and gallbladder. Breakouts in that area can indicate that you might be consuming too much rich foods such as dairy and meat. Limit your intake on those two food groups. You can opt for eating more fruits and veggies in your diet. This also might have something to do with pollution, or the air you’re breathing, especially if you live within the urban, city areas. Every once in a while, try to get some fresh, clean air by taking a walk in the park or neighboring hiking trails.

Cheeks

The right side of your cheeks is connected to your lungs, while the left side of your cheeks is connected to your kidneys (also related to your liver a well). Reasons being could be due to unhealthy foods, high stress, and smoking. Simplest solution to getting rid of skin problems on these areas is to eat healthy and consume less sugar. Eat foods that have a lot of water retained in them, such as cucumber and melons. The key to treatment is getting the proper hydration.

Nose

This area is connected to your heart, can breakouts can happen due to pollution, inconsistent blood circulation, and high blood pressure. To counter this, exercise, watch cholesterol and high blood pressure levels, and sweat out toxins with soup, green tea, etc. Eating foods with fiber, vitamin B and omega-3 and 6 will also counter against constant acne on your nose.

Mouth & Chin

Around the mouth and chin area is related to what goes on inside your stomach. The biggest factor to breakouts on these areas is due to bad diet and stress. Consuming too much fat, sweets, caffeine, and alcohol will cause some digestive problems in your stomach and will show on your face. Again, maintain a healthy diet of fruits, veggies, and fibers such as chia seeds and aloe vera can improve stomach health. Especially around the chin area, stress can cause hormones to break out and show as acne. To counter that, find ways to de-stress the body. You could start by drinking spearmint tea or taking omega-3’s to relieve breakouts. In any case, also check with your local doctor or dermatologist on your hormone levels.

Overall, maintain a healthy body and face can be obtaining a healthy diet with no processed ingredients, drinking a lot of water, having at least eight hours of sleep, and taking the time to de-stress your mind and body.

Cultural Appropriation Meets High Fashion

The fashion world is no stranger to cultural appropriation. Appreciation, inspiration, admiration: call it what you want, it still doesn’t change the reality of its existence. It is a real and relevant problem in today’s society, though not a new one. Often, we’ve allowed ourselves to be blind to it. Even more so, we’ve normalized and justified the theft of countless cultures in the name of fashion.

Marc Jacobs

It was in New York at the well-known “Fashion Week” that Marc Jacobs closed out the show. The outfits of his 2016 Spring collection were – unsurprisingly- to die for, but the hair of his models? Not so much. Rather than fawning over the dazzling ensembles, most people were left trying to wrap their heads around the girls’ colorful dreads.

The poorly mimicked hairstyles immediately elicited the rage of people all over social media. They called Jacobs out for cultural appropriation for this stolen style. Except, it wasn’t just the appropriation itself, but Jacobs’s reaction to the backlash.

Understandably, viewers and fashion fans found Jacobs’ actions to be in poor taste and they had no qualms about verbalizing their complaints. Dreads are a recognized part of a cultural that has been around much longer than fashion shows and the designers whom wish to utilize them for their own selfish reasons. But, rather than give credit or apologize, Jacobs chose to go down with his sinking ship. He even had the audacity to suggest that women of color straightening their hair was no different than white girls with dreads. Probably not the best defense for his wrong doing. And it didn’t stop there.

Jacobs also admitted, “I don’t see color or race- I see people.” Its a nice gesture, on the surface, but the problem is that these cultures have color and they have race, in turn a culture. To ignore the race and background that the cultures come from is willful ignorance. And, put simply, its pretty insulting to those who consider these cultures sentimental and of great value to them.

Marc Jacobs was not the first appropriator of cultures. Far from it, in fact. War Bonnets, or Headdresses, are one of the most common cultural appropriations. They’re worn for sports teams, Halloween costumes and, of course, for fashion. What many people do not understand about Headdresses is that they hold a great deal of meaning to their Native American people. They have cultural and often spiritual (religious-like) significance. Its insulting and inappropriate no matter what the situation.

Another designer who aimed for a “culturally-inspired” look and fell a little short of successful was the one and only, Givenchy. When “Victorian Cholas” hit the runway in 2015, the name alone was cringe-inspiring. The faux facial piercings and familiarly styled baby hairs were more than good cause to throw our hands in the air and wonder when creativity became more about blind-ignorance. It doesn’t take a genius to see how tasteless and thoughtless the look was. Clearly, though, it didn’t do much in setting an example for potential future appropriators.

Givenchy

Last, but certainly not the least horrifying, is Valentino’s Spring 2016 collection. With a collection that claimed inspiration from Africa, we would have hoped to see a bit more diversity on the runway. Unfortunately, there was hardly any at all.

The lack of diversity only added salt to the wound of poor taste and bad choices. It seems extraordinarily daft to unleash this level of insult; the outfits, the hair, the blatant lack of diversity of the models. It was like one, continuous slap in the face…the sting of which stays with you for days. And, for some, maybe that sting never goes away.

We get it. The fashion world is in a constant competition. Designers look for inspiration all over the world. To broaden the fluidity of fashion and the diversity of it, it is difficult to avoid looking outside your own race and culture entirely. To be honest, its not really what people are asking. The problem of appropriation is  a mix of avoiding culturally significant concepts, staying away from blatant stereotypes, acknowledging the need for diversity in race if you chose to take on a diversity in culture. Not to mention, doing it with respect, taste, and yes , maybe some well-informed guidance.

Beauty isn’t everything. And, that which we admire should often stay that way: as something we admire. Knowledge and respect are about knowing the difference between admiration and appropriation.

The Art of Beauty Sleep

The Art of Beauty Sleep

Hello to all my glamorous people! I want today’s topic a little different- just short and sweet. However this is a major impact to your lifestyle and should be done routinely. As of now, I am finishing up my last year in college at a California State University. I am planning to finish with my entire class curriculum by the end of winter. Literally, winter is coming for me.

Image result for stressed

Unlike most colleges, my university runs alongside quarter system. A quarter system means the whole school season is condensed to around 10 weeks of school. Now that regular 15+ weeks of the semester system seems really nice huh? Since professors only have 10 weeks, the classes are running extremely fast. A lot of work gets compiled and it’s very time consuming for most students, me especially.

With this system, most students are running on at least four hours of sleep per night. Try balancing a short quarter system and keeping up with work, classes, and other curriculum activities within the two months. Yet, the lack of sleep can drastically affect the way they think, focus on studies, and their overall performance in both school and work life. This is obviously not healthy for anyone’s well-being.

A lot of people are slowly starting to forget the importance of sleep and how it affects the mind and body in positive way. Research studies show that getting at least eight hours of sleep per day will result in a lot positive impacts on your daily life.

Image result for beauty sleep

When you retain that beauty sleep, you’re less stressed and have an open and clear mind for the rest of the day. It affects your appearance as well. You prevent pre-mature wrinkles (around the forehead, under-eyes, sides of your nose and mouth, etc.) and slow down the signs of aging on your face.  You also prevent acne from appearing on your face and risks of scarring. Overall, your face will achieve that glowy complexion and your whole body and mind feels rejuvenated.

On my opinion, since around 90% of us do not have the luxury of getting that beautiful eight hour nap, here’s a suggestion. Try to get at least six hours of deep sleep and use the remaining two hours for power naps throughout the day.

Image result for beauty sleep

There are so many benefits on why getting enough sleep is extremely important, and I could go on forever on how important it is to get that beauty sleep. But the overall lesson is that to have a good night’s sleep is to have a healthy body, mind, and heart for the rest of your life. And that, my glamorous people, is the art and truth of it all.

Our Top Five Insta-No Photos

We love to post pictures on Instagram. Its a universal, guilty obsession shared by many. With so many photos getting posted every minute, there are bound to be some overdone, over the top pictures. If you post a picture of every meal, every workout or any of the Snapchat filters, you’re delving into the “insta-no” area. Here are five of the most hated types of photos posted on Instagram.

1. Food

14709408_299463390446779_7564271301926322176_n

I think we can all agree that one of the most commonly posted pictures on Instagram is of food. And, as much as we all love it, it’s a bit overdone. Not to mention the obviously intentional set-ups. The obviously intentional set-ups can be quite frustrating for someone who is lucky to catch a quick bite of yogurt. Coffee is my fuel. Food? Oh, that’s just a picture I get to drool over in irritation as I scroll through my feed. Do us all a favor and keep the meal-photos to a minimum. Whatever you had for breakfast is your business. Stop bragging.

2. Workout

14677439_1257784300919470_3164971429171036160_n

We get it. You’re super ripped and you spend most of your free time lifting weights and flexing for the camera. When I pop out my phone to take a selfie at the gym, its because I’ve grown bored of pretending to workout. For some, these photos are progress trackers and motivational posts to boost their own, and followers’ confidence. I applaud you, but not everyone does. Maybe, it’s the lack of motivation or the hopelessness we (the les ripped) feel seeing the post-workout selfies. Maybe its because we’re sitting at home in sweats with an opened jar of Nutella and bone to pick. Whatever the reason, gym selfies are one of the most hated.

3. Hand Holding

10268940_1574409306206026_468037746_n

I think it goes without being said that these are some of the cutest photos. But, in the same breath, they are cringe-worthy and sickly sweet. Single folks don’t have time for the commercial-like posed photo. Its just another reminder of the loneliness of some and the unmet relationship goals of others. You’ve got a hand, they’ve got a hand, is the picture proof necessary?

4. Snapchat Flower Crown

14726157_779018708907599_5891215565418135552_n

The two most consistent things in my life? The dog ears and flower-crown filters on Snapchat. When you’re feeling down in the dumps or having a no make-up day, snapchat filters are the answer. Fool everyone, even yourself, into thinking that your glowing skin and flowing hair is #goals. It might be better to keep them to Snapchat, though. 9 seconds of an overused filter is more than enough.

5. Yoga Poses

14718071_1160615964005734_4658817112632983552_n

I love yoga. Its got some of the best stress-relieving techniques and its one of the only ways I can claim a good workout. Yoga is all comfy clothes, a peaceful environment, and the perfect friend-date atmosphere. What’s not to love? The pictures, for one. Don’t get me wrong, you have every reason to be proud of your pretzel-twist look alike poses. But the intimacy and rawness of a good yoga outing shouldn’t be cheapened by an attempt for likes and impressed comments.

Lush Toothy Tabs & Tooth Powder

toothy-tabs

Lush Cosmetics is a cosmetics line that focuses on producing safe and natural beauty products. They have recently come out with a revolutionary idea: toothpaste that isn’t in paste form. The concept behind this product, named Toothy Tabs and Tooth Powder, is to give consumers an option for a natural toothpaste that still gets the job done.

Toothy Tabs: What Are They?

Toothy tabs are the vegan tablet forms of toothpaste in the new line. Each bottle of the product, priced at $10, has a decent amount of tabs that should last a few weeks if used daily. Lush recommends to use the tablets by crushing them in your mouth and then continuing to brush as you would normally. The line has come out with seven different types of the Toothy Tabs: Bling!, Dirty, Miles of Smiles, Limelight, Smile, Boom, and Oral Pleasure.

Bling! is a tablet that has been dusted with edible gold glitter for that fancy feeling. These tablets advertises a refreshing citrus flavor along with stimulating guarana seed powder to energize you for the day! Dirty is a simple white tablet that most resembles the original toothpaste we all know and use. Dirty’s defining feature is a classic spearmint flavor with a few essential oils thrown in there. Miles of Smiles is another white tablet. But this one has the promise of a strong triple mint flavor derived from the combination of english peppermint, organic peppermint and wild mint. Limelight is a green and yellow marbled tablet. It promises to give you a powerful citrus and mint flavor from lemon, lime and spearmint oils. One of these tablets also has baobab fruit powder that turns your mouth into a fizzing toothpaste party!

Sparkle is another tablet with a citrus flavor from grapefruit oil and lemon peel but with a surprising twist: black pepper. This unique addition serves to give a warming, tingly sensation during your experience. Boom! is a black tablet that is made of detoxifying ingredients such as powdered charcoal and gunpowder tea. Through the combination of black pepper oil and ground chili, a cola flavor and a warming feeling is created for this tablet. Lastly, Oral Pleasure is a magenta tablet with a sweet and tart flavor of passion fruit. Rose oil and tantalizing electric daisies also give this tablet a tingling feeling when used.

Lush's Tooth Powder
Lush’s Tooth Powder

Tooth Powder: Better Than Normal Toothpaste?

Tooth Powder is a vegan alternative to regular toothpaste and basically an already crushed form of the Toothy Tabs. It’s also the same price. Lush recommends using the powder by dabbing your damp toothbrush into the pot and brushing as you normally would. The product has three different options: Tooth Fairy, Ultrablast, and Atomic.

Tooth Fairy  is a pink tooth powder with a sweet strawberry and lemon flavor with a little luster in the mix for added sparkle! Ultrablast is a light green powder that promises and extra minty flavor with a twist. It’s composed of peppermint, spearmint and lavender for ultimate freshness. The twist is wasabi powder that provides a refreshing cooling sensation. Atomic is another green powder that is advertised as a ‘spice market’. This specific Tooth Powder contains coffee, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and white pepper in order to provide a spicy tingle.

So… Are They Worth Ditching Our Regular Toothpaste?

If you’re up to feeling adventurous with your oral hygiene routine or just for trying something new, go for it! Each product is highly rated on Lush’s website, all flavors are either three stars or above. Buzzfeed recently posted a video in which employees tried a few of the new products. The reactions were very mixed between dislike and moderate liking. I say if you’re feeling brave enough, why not try it? Go forth and have fun brushing your teeth like a hipster!
