Fashion Pick of the Week: Flannels

Hello to of my Glamorous People! It’s the start of the weekend ahead, and everyone’s basically last work day of the week- so it’s no surprise a majority of us would rather spend the day having fun or save it for the evening after hours. Usually, it’s always the time to either dress up your look or play it up! For me, when Fridays roll around is where I usually like to play up my look with a casual flannel, a.k.a Flannel Friday.

Flannels are best in the game and everyone’s go-to fashion item when one feels like they have nothing else to wear for the day. They come in all different colors and stripped-dimensions to choose from. The possibility is almost endless. The best thing about it is that they are comfortable, looks good on everyone, and they can be worn for all four seasons of the year. Here’s simple ways to dress and play up your flannel game for the day.

By Itself

The easiest and fastest way to pick an outfit, be out of the door for the day, AND still look good! To style this look, just put on a pair of jeans, some sneakers or boots, and some minimalist accessories like a watch  or a scarf. Boom! You are good to go for the day. You can even wear it as a dress if the flannel is long enough! Tip: When wearing a flannel as a dress, pair it with over-the-knee style boots or short, ankle boots with the thick heel to make the outfit chicer. Or simply throw on some leggings (black’s usually the safest way to go) and throw on some pair of sneakers.

As a Throw-Over Cardigan

This is another easy and fast look to add a little more casualness to the outfit. It’s almost as flawless as dressing the flannel by itself. As an undershirt, you can stick with any color that correlates with the flannel. However, I suggest sticking with a neutral color such as white, black, or beige is always a safe way to go. For more of a rebel/punk feel, throw on a graphic tee! Too many options to pair with? Go with your favorite pair of jeans, sneakers/boots, and needed accessories to complete the look.

Around the Waist

What happens when the weather gets too hot to wear these long-sleeved plaids? Of course, you might want to take the flannel off…but where can you put your flannel if you don’t want to carry it all day? Easy- just the good ‘ole fashioned wrap-around-the-waist trick. A flannel can be used as an accessory, not just as a clothing necessity. It adds a twist to your outfit and is one of the trendiest ways to wear it!

With a Vest

Pairing a vest can add a bit more of a fall and winter look to your outfit. It also looks really comfy as well as keeping you warm! Tip: try opting for a puffy looking vest like the one shown above- it will really set the mood for the upcoming cold season.

With a Sweater or Jacket

Speaking of the cold season, layering a flannel under a sweater or jacket is another option for adding more flair to your look. Layering flannels and sweaters will also keep you warm throughout the day. To add a bit of a school prep look, wear loafers and some classic jewelry. Just be sure to choose sweaters or jackets that match well with your already-distinct flannel.

How to De-Stress- Part One

Hello to all my Glamorous and beautiful people! How are you guys today? With the 2016 presidential elections finally past us (whoopee.), the holiday season coming up, and all the complexities of life coming at us like bullets, it’s no wonder a majority of us are burnt out. We all feel it at some point. Quoting Michelle Phan, “We’re kind of like mobile devices- we’re always working and running for hours on end, constantly keeping up-to-date with society and balancing between different stages of our lives.” But like these devices, we can’t run on forever. Even devices shut off when it’s overworking itself. So as humans, why shouldn’t we do the same? Taking the time to wind down and relax can really help your mental and physical state. Which, in the long run, can help in better performance in your career and personal life. In this article, I’ll show you a few tips on how to start to put de-stressing time into your daily routine.

Unplug and unwind

That’s the first step everyone should do. This means turning off any electronic devices such as computers, television, cell phones, tablets- anything that would distract you from going back down to earth. This is the time to settle down and take focus upon yourself and no one else. If you have a lot of friends that like to talk to you on a daily basis, give them a heads up that you will take off an hour or two for self-reflection, and will inform them when you will be back online. Take this time to do a complete digital detox. By simply unplugging, you are taking the initiative to be able to unwind be able to start on your journey of self-reflection and recovery.

Warm Water Therapy

This is one of the more common therapies used within the home because biologically we are geared towards water or liquids for hydration. There are so many ways in which someone can utilize different forms of water therapy. Taking a hot bath with added minerals, salts, and even Lush’s famous bath bombs into the tub can instantly boost up the calm aura. This will help you relax all the muscles in your body. Drinking hot teas, hot chocolate, and soup can help relax your body and sweat out all the toxins. Remember to take your time with your beverages- there’s no need to rush.

Music

Another therapy soothing to the ear. Take a break from all the Top 40 on KISSFM, and listen to more soothing music, such as classical music, new classical music, nature sounds, meditation sounds, etc. Take this time to meditate and release all thoughts of negativity and stress from your life. This will help you solely focus on the music and the rhythm of your breathing. If classical music or meditation isn’t your style, go for some acoustics or soft indie music. This might sound similar to the songs played at your local Starbucks coffee shop. Other activities you can do while listening to soothing background music is to either read your favorite book, drawing, or writing.

Cosmetic Brand Spotlight: Bésame

Hello, all you glamorous and fabulous people! This week, I was introduced by one of my friends to an interesting makeup brand that I’m sure most of you makeup-nistas would love to try and get your hands on! Thanks to the power of the Internet, Bésame is a trending topic among the beauty division. It is also in the most notable fashion magazines such as Elle, Vogue, and Marie Claire! Here’s the catch, most of their cosmetics available only through Sephora or exclusively online purchases.

Bésame is a cosmetics line that specializes in classic and vintage makeup, representing the elegance, femininity, and strength of all women. This cosmetic brand’s purpose is to bring out the confidence in women everywhere. Founder of Bésame, Gabriela Hernandez, created this line in remembrance of her cherished times with her grandmother. Hernandez has always looked to her grandmother’s collection of vintage and classic makeup as inspiration. With the idea of bringing the classic romantic age back, Hernandez created the brand to remind women exactly how beautiful they are, regardless of time.

Bésame cosmetics is focused upon on the beauty of vintage makeup inspired by the time eras of the early 1920s-1950s. The color schemes and the packaging of each cosmetic are made accustomed to fit the style of the certain time period. In most of their products, red and gold are accented as part of their main color schemes.

Recently, Buzzfeed released a video that introduced classic makeup products and trends for the staff to try out, featuring all of the popular bestsellers of the brand, including their cake mascara, Delicate Rouge blush, and classic color lipsticks.

One of their most interesting products, in my opinion, would have to be their cake mascara. Presenting with a black block of mascara, cake mascara was one of the first forms of applying the product. Provided with a brush, users can apply the mascara on their eyelashes, eyebrows, and can even use it as eyeliner.

Delicate Rough blush features pigmented pink, red and orange colors that bring out the dramatic glow to the face, just like the style back over 90 years ago.

The Art of Chinese Face Mapping

Hello to all my lovely and beautiful Glamorous People! Let’s face it (literally): we all have struggles and insecurities about our acne. For real- who doesn’t? It’s totally normal and it’s a part of our human development. Recently, I noticed I started to breakout a few pimples around my T-zone area- mostly around my chin, mouth, and the center of my forehead area. It’s probably due to lack of sleep, stress, irregular eating schedules and a bunch of other factors that cause these red, painful bumps on my face.

That’s pretty easy to point out how you might have gotten acne. But did you know where acne might pop-up, can be a certain part of your immune system that causes it? This is called Chinese face mapping. Chinese face mapping is a longstanding, Eastern medicine practice used to determine how healthy your body. What it does is indicate the parts of the face that corresponds with a specific internal organ. If acne, pimple, or discoloration pops up on certain places on your face, it usually means that there is a deficiency with that internal organ. The only way to make it go away is to make changes in your diet and lifestyle.

There are many places on the face where it centers on different organs, but here’s a quick overview on the different parts of the face that indicates internal organ problems. (Plus, a bit of anatomy 101, just for you cool, biology geeks out there!)

Forehead (Above the brows)

The forehead indicates the gallbladder and bladder in the body. These two organs, apart from the kidney, act as a filter for the body by getting rid of the toxins and other foreign materials that shouldn’t be good for the immune system. If breakouts occur there, eat less processed or junk food and reduce the intake of fat in your diet. Instead, try to consume more organic and raw foods and probiotics. Getting enough sleep will also do the job.

Between the brows

This area, also including the middle part of the forehead, indicates the liver of the body. The liver is a main organ that acts as a filter along with the bladder and gallbladder. Breakouts in that area can indicate that you might be consuming too much rich foods such as dairy and meat. Limit your intake on those two food groups. You can opt for eating more fruits and veggies in your diet. This also might have something to do with pollution, or the air you’re breathing, especially if you live within the urban, city areas. Every once in a while, try to get some fresh, clean air by taking a walk in the park or neighboring hiking trails.

Cheeks

The right side of your cheeks is connected to your lungs, while the left side of your cheeks is connected to your kidneys (also related to your liver a well). Reasons being could be due to unhealthy foods, high stress, and smoking. Simplest solution to getting rid of skin problems on these areas is to eat healthy and consume less sugar. Eat foods that have a lot of water retained in them, such as cucumber and melons. The key to treatment is getting the proper hydration.

Nose

This area is connected to your heart, can breakouts can happen due to pollution, inconsistent blood circulation, and high blood pressure. To counter this, exercise, watch cholesterol and high blood pressure levels, and sweat out toxins with soup, green tea, etc. Eating foods with fiber, vitamin B and omega-3 and 6 will also counter against constant acne on your nose.

Mouth & Chin

Around the mouth and chin area is related to what goes on inside your stomach. The biggest factor to breakouts on these areas is due to bad diet and stress. Consuming too much fat, sweets, caffeine, and alcohol will cause some digestive problems in your stomach and will show on your face. Again, maintain a healthy diet of fruits, veggies, and fibers such as chia seeds and aloe vera can improve stomach health. Especially around the chin area, stress can cause hormones to break out and show as acne. To counter that, find ways to de-stress the body. You could start by drinking spearmint tea or taking omega-3’s to relieve breakouts. In any case, also check with your local doctor or dermatologist on your hormone levels.

Overall, maintain a healthy body and face can be obtaining a healthy diet with no processed ingredients, drinking a lot of water, having at least eight hours of sleep, and taking the time to de-stress your mind and body.

Artist Spotlight: Porter Robinson

To all my glamorous people and music lovers! Although I don’t have an exact favorite music genre to listen to, I love going out and exploring on new music. Every once in a while it’s nice to get away from all of the mainstream music.  So quite recently, a friend from work recommended me this artist to listen to. I have been hooked since then. For all you EDM fans, this ones for you, here’s my pick for music artist of the week.

Porter Robinson is an American DJ, record producer, and musician from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He specializes in electro house, dubstep, and synthpop music. A majority of his influences come from Japanese culture, Japanese anime, and gaming which he integrates into his music. Since 2010, he has been gaining popularity all over the country and was recognized overseas as a one of the music industry’s leading electronic DJs and producers. He collaborated with multiple DJs and music artists on the nation’s top hits. One you may know is Zedd’s “Clarity.”

In 2014, Robinson made his debut album “Worlds” through Astralwerks and Virgin EMI. Since that time, he was on hiatus with the purpose of producing new music. He collaborated with Madeon to produce “Shelter” and the single was released on August 11, 2016.

On October 18, Robinson collaborated with A-1 Pictures and Crunchyroll to release a new Japanese anime music video “Shelter.” The story tells of a 17-year-old girl named Rin, who lives alone in the confinements of an empty virtual space. She takes control of that virtual reality and with her vivid imagination, creates a world of her own. During the process, she discovers an important aspect of her past and its key help her move forward in the future.

What attracts people to his music is his ability to not only incorporate different elements in tune with the music he creates, but his ability to have his music tell a story and to give it depth and meaning in his tracks. His music is highly praised for its worldly difference from other DJs and for its Japanese-inspired synchronicity.
