Kanye West announced that he plans to run for President in 2020 while accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at this year’s MTV VMAs.

The greatest announcement of all time, of all time. This Sunday’s MTV VMAS were filled with some shocking moments, from Nicki calling out Miley, to Justin Bieber sobbing on stage. However, the most shocking moment of all might have been when Kanye West announced his candidacy for president in 2020.

Kanye took the stage to accept the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award during the show. The award is one of the biggest honors of the night. Last year, it was presented to Justin Timberlake who then performed and even reunited NSYNC on stage for the occasion (one of my favorite MTV moments ever). However, producers for the show were not even sure what Kanye was planning to do until he did it.

Kanye allegedly kept changing his mind about the night. Originally, he was going to perform, then he was not going to even show up to the show, then he was showing up but no one knew if he was performing. What the producers did know was that Taylor Swift would be presenting the award. This marked a momentous occasion because it was on that very stage six years ago that Kanye infamously interrupted Taylor to announce that Beyonce “had the best music video of all time”. This was an event that Taylor referenced and poked fun of during her speech, even quoting his famous “I’m really happy for you and Imma let you finish” line.

It was then that Kanye took the stage and waited listening to the audience applaud him for an uncomfortably long time. It seemed as though he might perform, but instead he launched into one of the most rambling and confusing speeches of all time. He started with what appeared to be an apology to Taylor for his behavior six years ago and quickly got off on a tangent that included fresh juice, his hatred for award shows and his daughter. He even admitted that he smoked weed before taking the stage, “Y’all might be thinking right now, ‘I wonder did he smoke something before he came out here?’ And the answer is yes, I rolled up a little something, I knocked the edge off,” said West.

However, the most shocking part of his speech came at the end, when he announced his plans to run for president. “As you probably could’ve guessed by this moment, I have decided, in 2020, to run for president,” said West. This announcement elicited a shocked response from the entire audience, including Swift who was standing with Kim Kardashian and her family. In fact, the whole family looked pretty surprised and started to laugh. Kylie Jenner’s boyfriend, Tyga, even gave Kanye a high five as he exited the stage. It remains to be seen whether Kanye was just joking (as I suspect) or was actually serious about running.
