Millions of teen girls everywhere experienced their first heartbreak this week when it was announced that Zayn Malik left One Direction. It was a moment that seems to happen to almost all teenage boy bands (for me, the hardest will always be the dark day Justin Timberlake discovered he didn’t need the rest of NSYNC). However, this one followed a lot of speculation about his personal life and came just months after rumors of a possible drug problem surfaced.
“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world,” Malik said about his decision to leave the group on Wednesday, March 25, 2015.
Zayn’s announcement was followed by support from the band’s remaining four members Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne. The announcement came just after Malik left the band’s tour. Originally, it was speculated that Malik’s decision to leave the tour was because of circulating rumors that he cheated on his fiancée, Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards (many are now comparing her to Yoko Ono). However, it was also speculated that previous claims of drug abuse were to blame. However, Malik denied both the drug abuse and infidelity claiming that he left the band because he wants to be a normal 22-year-old boy again.
It has been about five years since he was a normal anything. One Direction blew up after the five boys were paired together to form a band on the X-Factor UK. Since, the group has become an international sensation with four albums, all debuting at number one on the Billboard charts. One Direction will continue as a four-person band and they plan to put out new music later this year.
