Kathy Griffin has decided to leave Fashion Police just one month after the departure of Kelly Osbourne. The decision comes after taking the seat previously held by comedian Joan Rivers until she passed away late last year. Griffin only served on the E! show for seven episodes.
Fashion Police has experienced a lot of controversy this year, which has lead to the cast departures. Host Giuliana Rancic came under fire for her comments about actress Zendaya Coleman’s Oscar look, stating that she looks as though she smells like Patchouli or weed. The offensive comments played a strong role in Osbourne’s decision to leave Fashion Police and could have influenced Griffin’s as well. Griffin did state that she would never have made the comment in the first place herself.
There is a lot of speculation over why Griffin left, with many believing that she did not like the goal of Fashion Police and it’s critical nature. “I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference,” Said Griffin, in a statement on her departure. This could relate to the comments about Zendaya as well as the general feel of the show, which analyzes celebrities’ red carpet looks and can often get critical. Other speculations over her departure include the lack of creative control she was given and a general poor fit with the comedy of the show.
Upon her decision to leave, Griffin has received strong support from her fellow celebrities. Chelsea Handler, who famously had a show on the E! network, applauded her decision tweeting “way to go girl. Stick to your guns. Onwards and sideways. Lub you”. Other stars that supported her include Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell Mindy Kaling, and Kelly Osbourne.
